Brampton Manor Academy, a selective sixth form with academy status in Newham, east London, announced that 55 of its pupils have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge, placing it ahead of Eton College.

The 42,500-a-year Eton, which has educated 20 prime ministers and princes William and Harry, received 48 offers. The number of Eton students receiving offers from Oxford or Cambridge has halved since 2014, with 99 offers in 2014 and 48 this year.

The school opened its sixth form in 2012 with the aim of transforming progression rates to Oxford, Cambridge and other elite Russell Group universities for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In 2014, just one Brampton Manor pupil was offered an Oxbridge place. The academy has remarkable success with 25 Oxbridge places in 2018, 41 Oxbridge places in 2019, 51 Oxbridge places in 2020 and now 55 Oxbridge places in 2021. 147 students at Brampton Manor Academy in Newham have been offered Oxbridge places in the last three years.

Most of the school’s pupils come from ethnic minority backgrounds, receive free school meals or will be the first in their family to go to university.

Sam Dobin, director of sixth form at Brampton, said self-belief is just one piece of the jigsaw that enables students to succeed. He added: “There is a lot of misconception about what a ‘typical’ Oxbridge student is like and we work hard to dispel the myth that they need to look or sound a certain way.

“The best universities are looking for the most academically able students; our school community is full of exceptionally bright students, and our job is to empower them to achieve to their potential, knowing that if they do this nothing will stop them from reaching the highest of heights.”

Sonja , who received offer to study human, social and political science at Cambridge, said: “Being the first person in my family to submit an application to university, let alone get an offer from the University of Cambridge, feels incredible. My family were so full of joy when they found out about my offer and we are all so excited for the next chapter in my life.”

Harun, who received an offer to study politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford is also a first-generation applicant to university.

Chloe, who is eligible for Free School Meals, was offered a place to study Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. She said: “An important part of applying to top universities is believing that you actually have a chance, which Brampton reassures you of from the beginning.”
