Features

  • Castle: Armadale Castle was once the seat of the Macdonalds of Sleat, part of the mighty Clan Donald. Now a ruin, it sits in a dramatic position overlooking the Sound of Sleat and surrounded by 40 acres of magnificent woodland gardens.
  • Gardens: Our magnificent gardens are the perfect place to explore and relax. Take in panoramic views, marvel at impressive trees and enjoy colourful plants in our peaceful oasis. The gardens were originally laid out by Lord Macdonald in the early 19th century. They were later restored and developed by our charitable trust for everyone to enjoy. Today you can wander amidst 40 acres of trees, shrubs and flowers. A surprising number of exotic varieties thrive in our mild, sheltered microclimate.
  • Museum: Experience the history of the Highlands and Islands through the epic story of Clan Donald, Scotland’s largest and most powerful clan. Witness the clan’s changing fortunes, from mighty Lords of the Isles, through the tumult of Jacobite risings, to the hardship of clearance and emigration.
  • Walks & Wildlife: The terrace walk along the garden edge boasts some of the best views in Skye, looking over the Sound of Sleat to the mountains of Knoydart. Outside the gardens we have created some walking trails into areas of beautiful mixed woodlands, with plenty of opportunities for wildlife-spotting.
  • Library & Archives: The Archive collections house the Macdonald Estate Papers and Correspondence, a unique collection of original rentals and estate documents relating to Skye and North Uist which provide a framework for local history and genealogy research. The catalogue of this collection is available online through the National Register of Archives for Scotland; the catalogue reference number is NRAS3273. For further details of Macdonald Estate documents held in our Archive please contact the library, quoting the individual document reference number.
