Features

  • Birds: Enjoy a floor-to-ceiling display of taxidermy birds, each species displayed in a unique recreation of its natural habitat. Edward Booth’s ambition was to collect an example of every species of British bird and it was to house this growing collection that, in 1874, he built this museum in the grounds of his home in Dyke Road.
  • Bones: Skulls and skeletons from an extensive collection are on show here, demonstrating the similarities and differences between a fascinating range of creatures, great and small. The Osteological or Skeleton Gallery is based on the collection of Frederick William Lucas (1842-1932), a local solicitor with a keen interest in zoology. He acquired his objects and specimens from auctions as well as from other collectors and travellers, and displayed them at his home in Rottingdean.
  • Butterflies & Insects: Brilliant colours, unusual shapes, spooky patterns – our butterfly displays present these fragile creatures in all their glory, along with information about their origins, life cycles and survival strategies.
  • Victorian Study: Visit our recreation of Mr Booths study, where you can play the part of a Victorian naturalist. This space invites you to sit and relax in one of the comfy armchairs and flick through a Victorian photo album or maybe read a book. There are costumes to try on to help with your Victorian transformation, as well as a table with games to play.
  • Discovery Lab: Imaginative displays, hands-on activities for kids, plus information about how to protect our planet. Our family-friendly Discover Lab will educate and inspire a new generation of natural historians.
