Castle Rising, One of the largest, best preserved and most lavishly decorated keeps in England, surrounded by 20 acres of mighty earthworks. Building of the castle was begun in 1138 by the Norman lord William d'Albini for his new wife, the widow of Henry I. In the 14th century it became the luxurious residence of Queen Isabella, widow (and alleged murderess) of Edward II. 

Don’t Miss Climbing up the steps by the gatehouse to see the scale of the earthworks. Appreciating the elaborate decoration on the outside of the keep which looks stunning when entering the castle from the gatehouse. Exploring the Great Hall and its splendidly decorated waiting room. Visting the remains of Queen Isabella's apartments and imagining her luxurious lifestyle at the castle. Viewing the remains of an early Norman Church within the inner bailey that pre-dates the castle.

  • Toilets: There are toilets facilities (including accessible toilets and baby changing facilities) in the car park open evey day from April until October while the castle is open, and open at weekends only in the from November to March while the castle is open.
