Description

Crownhill Fort is one of the best preserved 19th-century forts in Britain, built in the 1860s to defend Plymouth’s naval base from a feared French attack. Designed by Captain Edmund du Cane, it formed part of the historic Palmerston Forts programme. Today, it is owned by The Landmark Trust and combines military history, heritage preservation, and community use in one remarkable Victorian site.

The Fort features extensive Victorian fortifications, several acres of grounds, and museum displays explaining its military past. It offers tailored pre-booked group tours, open days and public events throughout the year, plus self-catering holiday accommodation in the former Officers’ Quarters. The site is also home to a community of small businesses, and facilities include secure cycle parking with CCTV, shower and changing facilities, and electric bike charging.

The cost of pre-booked tours starts from £100, based on a 2-hour visit for a group of 20, and tours are available all year round.

Overall, Crownhill Fort offers a powerful glimpse into Victorian military engineering and over a century of British military history. Its preserved architecture, guided tours, and atmospheric grounds create an engaging and educational experience. This attraction is ideal for history enthusiasts, school groups, societies, and visitors looking to explore one of Plymouth’s most impressive historic landmarks.
