Culloden Wood is a peaceful woodland area located on the outskirts of Inverness, offering scenic walking trails and historical significance. Visitors can follow a 3.5 km circular trail that passes through woodland while highlighting key historical spots linked to the Battle of Culloden. Along the route, you’ll find landmarks such as the Prisoners’ Stone and the Lord President’s Seat, as well as St Mary’s Well, a traditional clootie well associated with local folklore and good luck rituals. The trail can also be extended to include Culloden Battlefield for a deeper historical experience. 

Entry to Culloden Wood is completely free, making it an accessible outdoor attraction. Parking is available on-site, and the woods are open daily from dawn to dusk.

  • Culloden Woods, on the outskirts of Inverness, offers a popular 3.5 km circular trail that is suitable for all the family. Discover the hidden historic sites along the trail linked to the battle of Culloden and to Inverness' pagan past.
  • For a longer walking challenge, this walk can be extended to take in Culloden Battlefield and visitor centre, the site of the last battle fought on British soil.
  • The Battle of Culloden was fought on Wednesday 16 April 1746. The Prisoners’ Stone is a reminder of where Government troops shot 17 Jacobite prisoners the day after the battle.
  • Whereas, the Lord President’s Seat is dedicated to local laird Duncan Forbes who helped the Government side. There is also a longer Culloden Battlefield Trail, which explores the whole battlefield area. Look out for the interpretive benches situated around the route.
  • St Mary’s Well is an older site and a traditional clootie well. A cloot is a rag. It’s said that dipping a cloot  in the well and tying it to a tree brings good luck.
  • If you want to bring a cloot by all means do Please make sure it is small, appropriate and biodegradable. Pure wool or pure cotton are best for the environment. You’ll find another clootie well at Munlochy Clootie Well.

From Inverness, take the A96 towards Aberdeen and after about 1 mile (1.6 km) take the 2nd roundabout exit towards Balloch, Culloden and Smithton. At the second set of traffic lights turn right towards Culloden Moor and Croy. The car park is on your left after ¼ mile (400 metres).
