The Elham Valley Line Trust was formed in 1984 dedicated to preserving railway history, countryside crafts and to provide educational facilities. It is a Registered Charity (295563 and is run solely by volunteers and totally reliant on income from the museum, craft centre, membership subscriptions and donations.

Volunteers are always welcome to join our enthusiastic team, no matter how much time or support you can offer. There are always things to do, maintaining the buildings, grounds and displays, helping to run our Tea Room, selling tickets or simply being around to chat to people about the historical artefact's on display. There may even be a chance to drive the miniature train and work on the platform.

Prices starts from £4.00 for adults, £3.00 for Child(under 16yrs) and £30.00 for Family. If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

Features

  • Railway Museum: It is just a short walk from the Countryside Centre to the Railway Museum, where for a modest charge, you can be transported back to a 1930s railway station as it would have been on the Elham Valley Line. You can wander round our station building and look at the historical local and railway memorabilia or watch the model train sweep along the Elham Valley from Canterbury to Folkestone.
  • George’s Barn: This scroll commemorates the donation by Eurotunnel to the Elham Valley Line. Trust of the lease of the land at Peene for the construction of a museum and craft centre on the anniversary of the “cutting of the first sod” of the Elham Valley Line on 28th August 1884.
  • George’s Tangled Bank: Over 150 years ago, Charles Darwin took inspiration whilst writing “On the Origin of Species” from a “tangled bank” close to his home where he observed: –m“…many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent upon each other in so complex a manner …”

Facilities

  • Parking: Car parking is free at George's Barn.
  • Food & Drinks: There is no charge to visit the Tea Room where you can enjoy a hot drink and a slice of home-made cake or maybe a sandwich, or even a jacket potato, and don’t forget ice creams.
