Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway

The Falkirk Wheel is the world’s only rotating boat lift, located in Falkirk, Scotland. It connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal 35 metres above, allowing boats to travel “through the sky” in just a few minutes. Opened in 2002, this remarkable structure combines modern engineering with ancient principles first described by Archimedes.
The Wheel replaced a historic flight of 11 locks that once required a full day of hard work to navigate. Today, visitors can watch – or ride – as the massive 1,800-tonne structure smoothly rotates, lifting boats 35 metres into the air while staying perfectly balanced. The attraction also features a café, gift shop, family-friendly facilities, dog-friendly areas and venue hire options.
Tickets cost £17.95 for adults, £16.50 for concessions and £9.80 for children aged 5–15, while children under 5 and registered carers go free.
The Falkirk Wheel is not just an engineering achievement but also a striking piece of moving sculpture. It has transformed Falkirk into a major tourism destination, attracting visitors from around the world. For those interested in innovation, history or simply a unique boat ride experience, it offers an unforgettable day out in Scotland.
