Your trip to the Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre will be a terrific day out – you can get a glimpse back across hundreds of millions of years and see for yourself the truly ancient fossilised ghost like remains of the scary looking creatures that inhabited Orkney 385 years ago. You can fire up your imagination by handling a real 30 million year old fossil and cast your eyes over a fossil which is approximately half a billion years old.
The Orkney Fossil Centre also hosts a geological display and you can learn about the formation of these wonderful islands back at the dawn of time. Whether it’s the wow factor of rocks that glow in the dark, the intriguing fossils or the important scientific aspect of the geological collection there is something for everyone in this part of the Centre.
Use the new Interpretive Floor Map to understand the significance of the huge natural anchorage called Scapa Flow. This beautiful stretch of water and the surrounding islands witnessed possibly the most momentous act in naval history when, at the end of the First World War, 74 ships of the captured Imperial German Navy were scuttled on the instruction of Admiral Ludwig von Reuter.
Burray has been inhabited since Iron Age times, with agriculture and fishing very much at the heart of this island community. The new outdoor display area includes farm machinery and a Grey Fergie, one the tractors that revolutionised farming in Orkney and beyond. Indoors they have a host of interesting and intriguing exhibits for you.

By Bus from Kirkwall: Some folk drive, some cycle and some take the bus. The Bus to catch is the X1 heading for St Margaret’s Hope, The Fossil Centre is a request stop and is about 25 minutes from Kirkwall Bus Station adjacent to the Travel Centre. The X1 route takes you over the Churchill Barriers and there is a stop at The Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, just a couple of miles from The Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre. In the summer the buses run every half hour. (please check with Stagecoach).
From Kirkwall: A961 towards St Margaret’s Hope. The Fossil & Heritage Centre is on the left half a mile after crossing the third Churchill Barrier.
From South Ronaldsay: A961 towards Kirkwall. After Burray Village, pass Echna Loch on your right with Scapa Flow on your left. The Fossil & Heritage Centre is on the hill on the right.
