Features

  • Haugh Woods is a 350 hectare mixed woodland, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the rich diversity and nationally recognised for its butterflies and moths, with over 600 species living there!
  • The rare Wood White butterfly and Drab Looper moth thrive in the recently coppiced areas. From the main carpark, there are two waymarked butterfly trails, which include a number of information boards about the butterflies and the conservation work in the wood.
  • Both walks will take you through the beautiful mixed woodland and include some lovely views across the Herefordshire hills. In order to protect these very important and rare species, horse riding and mountain biking is not permitted off the main forest roads.
  • The trails are mainly made up of hard forest tracks, with gentle slopes, suitable for all abilities and for pushchairs. Both trails have an easy grade, the north is 1.5miles (2.4km) long and marked by red arrows, the South is 2 miles (3.21km) long and marked by green arrows.
  • This is a wonderful place to visit with the family, especially on a sunny day when you can bring a picnic to enjoy as you look out for species such as the Wood White, Speckled Wood and various types of Fritillary butterflies.
