Helmsley Walled Garden is a beautiful and historic garden set within the North York Moors National Park, beneath the ruins of Helmsley Castle. Dating back to 1759, it offers a peaceful and inspiring space filled with colour, heritage and wellbeing. It’s a perfect destination for garden lovers, families and those looking to relax in nature. 

Visitors can explore a variety of themed areas including vibrant flower borders, a Kitchen Garden, a Physic Garden with medieval medicinal herbs and orchards with over 100 apple varieties. Highlights include the central glasshouse with a National Collection of Rosebud Pelargoniums, the Clematis Garden and the unique Auricula Theatre. Guests can also enjoy picnics, wildlife spotting, feeding chickens and relaxing at the Vine House Café. 

Entry is priced at £15.50 for a day ticket. While there is no on-site parking, nearby public parking is available, and the garden café serves food and drinks between 10am and 4pm.

A Beautiful Garden, Changing Lives

  • Set in the North York Moors National Park, visit this historic walled garden and discover our vibrant borders, glasshouses and apple orchards. Stop for a delicious lunch or coffee and homemade cake at The Vine House Café.
  • Built in 1759, the garden sits beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle and has been welcoming visitors to North Yorkshire for over 30 years. People can improve their mental and physical health through gardening, and spending time in a garden.
  • Stroll along the Hot Border which zings with colour in summer, discover medieval medicinal herbs in the Physic Garden. Count our apple trees and find out about our collection of Yorkshire apple varieties or simply relax under a tree.
  • You can bring a picnic to enjoy in the garden, feed the chickens or discover how you can attract wildlife to your own garden. Discover delicious varieties of vegetables growing in our Kitchen Garden.
  • Or see herbs used by medieval monks for medicine in the Physic Garden. Explore our collection of over 100 different apple varieties or walk in the Clematis Garden.
  • Our central glass house is home to our National Collection of Rosebud Pelargoniums, and we have our own Auricula Theatre, made by maintenance volunteers.

  • Parking: The garden does not have any public parking. Parking is available in the nearby town of Helmsley and the nearest public car park to the garden is the Cleveland Way car park just a short distance from the garden. 
  • Food & Drinks: The Vine House Café serves food and drink between 10am and 4pm Wednesday – Sunday.

  • By Car: Car parking is in the Cleveland Way long stay car park. Once parked and looking at the castle the garden is a short walk along the path to the right and through the overflow car park.
  • By Bus: The EYMS Bus route 128 runs from Scarborough and Pickering to Helmsley (Scarborough and Pickering to Helmsley timetable) and the Reliance 31x from York to Kirkbymoorside via Helmsley (York to Kirkbymoorside via Helmsley timetable) In summer The Moors Bus has several routes that run through Helmsley (timetable).
