Features

  • Knebworth House: The romantic exterior of Knebworth House with its turrets, domes and gargoyles silhouetted against the sky does little to prepare the visitor for what to expect inside. The House has stood for many years longer than the Victorian decoration suggests; the stucco hides from view a red brick house dating back to the Tudor times. Knebworth House first achieved fame in Victorian times as the home of the novelist, playwright and politician Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, author of the words “it was a dark and stormy night” and “the pen is mightier than the sword”.
  • Gardens: The Gardens at Knebworth are delightful throughout the season. The 28-acre formal gardens include a maze, colourful borders, fine trees and a wilderness area with an exciting Dinosaur Trail. There have been gardens at Knebworth House since at least the 17th Century, but the present layout dates largely from the Edwardian era. The architect Sir Edwin Lutyens simplified the ornate beds and statuary of the Victorian garden with lawns and avenues of pollarded lime trees.
  • Knebworth Park: The historic deer park covers over 250 acres, and has been home to grazing herds of Red and Sika deer that have been at Knebworth for even longer than the Lytton family. The Park is a perfect setting for families to enjoy a country picnic, ball games and walks during our open season.
  • Dinosaur Trail: Our Dinosaur Trail in the Wilderness Garden is very popular with younger visitors. The 72 life-sized dinosaurs and pre-historic creatures can be found grazing amongst the shrubbery. Exploring the woodland paths, children can learn about the T-Rex, the Woolly Mammoth and other fascinating pre-historic creatures. There are information boards throughout the Dinosaur Trail and a huge chalk board for creating your own ‘cave-man drawings’.
  • Adventure Playground: Have a fun-filled day at the Adventure Playground: enjoy the astro and drop slides, play on the swings and slides at Fort Knebworth, whizz down the zip wire, try the interactive water play, and scale the climbing equipment. On the drop slide children must be 1.2 metres to ride alone. Children under 1.2 metres and over 0.8 metres can ride the curly slide only if accompanied by a responsible person over 16 years old on the same mat.
  • Watchman's Tower: Visitors can climb the staircase, which is made from oak from the Knebworth Estate, in order to reach the top viewing platform where you can enjoy stunning views of the local area. An interactive virtual reality app ‘Knebworth Watch’ is now available to download for free from the Apple Store and the Play Store. Immerse yourself in scenes from Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Tudor, Victorian and modern times which show you what Knebworth House and Park may have looked like in those periods.
  • ‘On Location’ Exhibition: Knebworth House, Gardens, Park and wider Estate have made starring appearances on the big screen in major feature films, series and music videos with highlights including Batman, The Crown, Paddington 2 and The King’s Speech. Discover the amazing variety of productions that have been filmed on the Knebworth Estate.
  • ‘Live At Knebworth’ Exhibition: Knebworth Park is the UK’s largest single-stage music venue, with a capacity of 125,000. For over 50 years it has hosted every major rock band, including The Rolling, Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Oasis and Robbie Williams as well as over 100 other major artists that have played Knebworth Festivals since 1974.
  • 'The Lyttons In India' Exhibition: This exhibition explores the Lytton family’s connection with Indian history and includes a collection of unique mementoes and photographs from the family’s time and travels in India  in the 1870s and the 1920s.
