Middleton Railway is the world’s oldest continuously working railway, offering a unique journey through over 260 years of railway history in Leeds. Run entirely by dedicated volunteers, this award-winning heritage attraction brings the golden age of steam and diesel trains back to life. It’s a perfect day out for families, railway enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys history and scenic countryside rides.

Visitors can ride beautifully restored steam or diesel trains from Moor Road to Park Halt, enjoying a nostalgic trip along historic tracks. The Engine House museum showcases historic locomotives and tells the story of Leeds’ locomotive-building industry. At the end of the line, Middleton Park offers 630 acres of woodland, walking trails, a boating lake, and a children’s play area, while the site also features a café and souvenir shop for a relaxed visit.

Ticket prices are affordable, with Adult Day Rover tickets at £9 and single journeys at £4.50, while children (5–15 years) pay £4 for a Steam Day Rover or £1 for a Diesel Day Rover, with single journeys at £2. Annual passes cost £30 for adults and £15 for children, and a family group ticket (2 adults + up to 3 children) is £22. Party train hire is available for £120 per session, covering up to 40 people for three return trips between Moor Road and Park Halt.

Middleton Park: Middleton Park, at the end of our line, covers an area of approximately 630 acres and is made up of a mixture of ancient woodland, open grassland and recreational areas. There are lots of signposted walks around the park, and there is a boating lake, a visitor centre and a children’s play area.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm: A working farm in Leeds, open 365 days a year for the public to visit the animals, gardens, and flourishing woodland. It has been around since 1980 as a city farm, when it was established with the goal of reconnecting urban people with their food. Farm produce is sold in the shop.

Party Trains

Normally party trains can run on most operating days, from Easter until the end of October, except when we have special events on.
Trains on Saturdays and Wednesdays (during school holidays) are normally diesel hauled, and trains on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays are usually steam hauled.
or a party train we reserve and decorate one coach for your exclusive use. You and your group can enjoy the party with friends whilst the train travels between Moor Road and Park Halt stations on our normal passenger service.
If you like you can leave the train at Park Halt and explore the ancient woodland of Middleton Park, returning to the train before your last party train departs!

The cost to hire a party train for either a morning or an afternoon session is £120. This covers up to 40 people for 3 return trips. Children under 1 year do not count towards this number.

We typically operate on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays from April through October, with special events throughout the season and our “Santa Specials” in December.
