Features

  • Station building: The station building contains: the Tea Room, toilets, disabled toilet with baby changing facilities, Mizens shop, a collection of railway memorabilia, paintings and displays. Access to the toilets is via the door at the left-hand end of the building and is signposted.
  • Mizens Shop: The shop carries a large selection of toys, books, games, paintings by a local artist, railway prints, models, signs and railway badges, etc. including the Bigjig range. Additional items can be ordered if not immediately available, please speak to the shop team.
  • Footbridge: Our footbridge provides a great viewing spot to watch the trains go by and provides access to our Pond. We will try to open our footbridge and route to the picnic area and pond on running days. Please keep to the paths and bear in mind that these have uneven surfaces. Access to the picnic area and pond will be closed at 4.30pm.
  • The Toad: The grey brake van, known as 'The Toad' located next to the ticket office provides information on what routes and trains are operating, found on the running board on the front of the van.
  • Main Engine Sheds: The loco sheds and turntable provide an insight into the preparation and maintenance of our loco fleet, especially shortly before and after our running sessions. To see the Locomotives and Rolling stock that runs on our railway, click here.
  • South signal box: A glimpse into our main signal box reveals the way we operate the railway in a way similar to full-size practice, using a 1/2 size lever frame to operate the points and signals.
  • The 4-VEP slam door coach: A full-size mainline Connex slam-door electric Driving Trailer coach that dominates the station approach.  We plan to permit public access to the driving cab in the future.
  • Dubs loco: No one can fail to see the splendid full-size loco at the entrance to our site.  This is a 3ft 6in gauge  "A" Class 4-8-2 tank engine built by the Dubs works (later the North British) in Glasgow in 1900 for the Natal Government Railway in South Africa. It later became South African Railways No 196.  It was brought back from South Africa to the UK by the North British Locomotive Preservation Group in 2011 and we are proud to have provided some support for this project and a home for the loco at Mizens Railway.
