Miniature pigs are used for racing as they tend to be quicker and more nimble – it’s really something to watch them go. The circular track, complete with jumps and tunnels, has been constructed as part of the ongoing programme of improvements and new additions.

  • Train Ride & Air Bouncers: ‘The Monk Park Express’ is a gentle ride for all ages and is free to ride. Check the notice boards for operating times. The two giant Air Bouncers provide great fun and a unique bouncing experience at a low level, suitable for all ages but a drink or ice cream might be needed after burning off all those calories.
  • Footpaths: In response to visitor feedback, the majority of gravel paths have been changed to tarmac to make getting around easier with pushchairs, buggies, and wheelchairs. Accessibility is very important, and improvements are ongoing.
  • Indoor Petting Barn: The indoor petting barn is open daily. Get up close with Guinea Pigs, baby Chicks, a Hen, and a Rabbit. Depending on the time of year, visitors can also see baby sheep, goats, llamas, and pigs. Check the notice boards for timings.
  • Bottle Feeding the Young Animals: At certain times of the year, bottle-feeding sessions for lambs, calves, and kids are held twice a day either in the Petting Barn or in the easy-access feeding enclosure near the play area. Check the notice board in the entrance courtyard on arrival for times, location, and availability.
  • Snuggle a Snout: Available daily during spring and early summer, this gentle and heartwarming experience gives visitors the chance to get up close and cuddle friendly micro pigs. It’s included with admission and always a firm favourite with familie a perfect mix of calm, cuteness, and unforgettable memories.

What to see

  • Meet the Animals:
    • Alpacas: The alpaca is a South American camelid mammal. They are similar to, and often confused with, the Llama. Alpacas are smaller than Llamas, but they are related and can successfully crossbreed.
    • Cameroon Sheep: Cameroon Sheep is one of the world’s oldest surviving breeds. Bred by humans in Africa, originally in Cameroon and other surrounding countries in West Africa, the breed has also been domesticated in Europe and is used primarily for meat production.
    • Degus: Degus are small, lively rodents originally from Chile in South America. They’re part of the same family as chinchillas and guinea pigs and are well known for their social nature, curious personalities, and playful behaviour.
    • Donkeys: Donkeys are hoofed mammals from the same family as horses and have been used as hardworking companions for over 7,000 years. Loyal, gentle, and full of character, they’re known for forming strong bonds with both people and other animals.
    • Golden Guernsey Goats: The Golden Guernsey Goat is a rare breed of dairy goat from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The Golden Guernsey is an endangered breed, with fewer than 1,400 existing worldwide.
    • Guinea Pigs: Guinea pigs are small, gentle rodents originally from the Andes in South America. They’ve been popular pets for centuries thanks to their sweet nature, soft fur, and adorable squeaky sounds!
    • Herdwick Sheep: Herdwick sheep are known for their distinctive wool. They are hardy animals and can survive harsh conditions due to their double-layer coat, thick stocky legs covered in wool, and small ears that help prevent heat loss.
    • Highland Cattle: Beautiful, gentle, and full of character. Highland cattle originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides. They’re easily recognised by their long, shaggy double coat and iconic fringe (or “dossan”), which protects their eyes from harsh weather and pesky insects.
    • Kunekune Pigs: Kunekune translates to “fat and round” which isn’t hard to see why. Although the breed came from New Zealand (being imported into Britain in 1992), its true country of origin is unknown and may have been Polynesia.
    • Large White Pig: The Large White is a British breed of domestic pig native to Yorkshire. This breed is big, pale pink, with pointy ears and a slightly dished face. They love to wallow in the summer, coating themselves in mud to cool down and to stop themselves from becoming sunburnt.
    • Llamas: Llamas are part of the camelid family and are said to date back 40 million years to the central plains of North America, which became extinct during the ice age. The only surviving generations of Llamas are the ones that migrated to South America.
    • Other Animals: Mangalica Pigs, Manx Sheep, Micro Pigs, Mini Beasts, Peacocks, Pekin Bantams, Polish Hens, Pot Bellied Pigs, Pygmy Goats, Rabbits, Red Deer, Runner Ducks, Shetland Ponies, Soay Sheep, Spiders, Teeswater Sheep, Valais Blacknose Sheep, Wallabies.
