Mount Grace Priory was the last of the great Yorkshire monasteries, founded in 1398. Five centuries later, its ruins were bought by wealthy industrialist Sir Lowthian Bell, enthusiast for the late Victorian Arts and Crafts movement.

Bell refurbished a 17th-century mansion within the priory buildings and created terraced gardens. Wander the terraces with their mature, richly planted borders and walk through a wildflower meadow to the Monks’ Pond. There’s a family trail and pamphlets pointing out seasonal highlights. The Orchard Café is open to all.

Explore the Priory: Visit Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens, and discover the best-preserved of the few English Carthusian monasteries. Founded in the late 14th century, you can still see remains of all the priory buildings today.
Contemplate life as a monk: Step inside the modest recreated monk's cell at Mount Grace Priory and see the rooms where a Carthusian monk lived and worked. On your way in, look out for the L-shaped hatch which was used to deliver food and other essentials without any need to communicate.
Enjoy an arts and crafts manor house: Wander the rooms, hallways and attics of the Arts and Crafts manor house at Mount Grace. Enjoy eclectic interiors where William Morris' designs complement original medieval and restored 17th century features. Stop by the drawing room to see an original William Morris carpet.

Museum: Museum contains displays and artefacts uncovered during site excavations. Situated on first floor, accessed via three flights of stairs.

Facilities

Parking: Free parking on site for English Heritage members displaying a valid car sticker. 150m walk from the car park to Mount Grace Priory. The car park can get very busy during the summer and other peak times. The busiest times are between 11am and 2pm. Parking charges apply to non-members and National Trust members.
Food And Drink: The Orchard Cafe serves hot meals and lighter options such as soups and sandwiches. We also serve a wide selection of sweet treats, and hot and cold drinks. Children's options are available.
Toilets: Male, female and disabled toilets. Baby-changing facilities located in the Manor House.
Dogs: Dogs on short leads are welcome in the grounds of Mount Grace. Please note, dogs are not permitted in the house, café interior or Reconstructed Monks Cell. Assistant dogs are welcome across the site.

Road Access: Mount Grace Priory is 12 miles north of Thirsk; and 6 miles north-east of Northallerton, near the A19. Take care when turning off the dual carriageway. Look out for brown English Heritage direction signs placed approximately half a mile before the turning.
Bus Access: There are no buses directly to the site. We recommend catching a bus to Osmotherley and walking from there (4.5 mile walk).
Train Access: Northallerton station is six miles from Mount Grace Priory.
Bicycle Access: Find your cycling route to Mount Grace Priory at sustrans.org.uk, the National Cycle Network. There are bike racks available at this site.
