It also features a dollshouse exhibition, Gyles Brandreth’s Teddy Bear Collection in The Bear House, and the Chippendale at Newby historical display.

  • The House: One of Britain’s finest Adam Houses Newby Hall, the family home of Mr & Mrs Richard Compton, is one of England’s renowned Adam houses and an exceptional example of 18th century interior decoration. Built in the 1690s by Sir Christopher Wren the house was later enlarged and adapted by John Carr and subsequently Robert Adam. The House is now open to visitors by booking a guided tour, the hour long house tours take you around the ground floor and first floor rooms. Our knowledgeable guides welcome any questions about the house and its history.
  • The Gardens: Newby’s award winning gardens, mostly created in the early 1920s, have evolved over the years making a major contribution to 20th century gardening. 
  • Sculpture Park: Newby Hall & Garden's sculpture park is now open for its nineteenth year. You'll find sculpture in every style - beginning outside the Newby Hall Roman Statue Gallery and meandering through formal gardens, woodlands and the orchard.
  • Boat Trips: Take a relaxing boat trip along the River Ure. The 2 boat fleet depart from the bottom of the borders on a 25 minute cruise up the river each day that Newby is open. Seeing the gardens from the river gives a different perspective and there are regular sightings of kingfishers, herons, the occasional otter and other wildlife.
  • Adventure Playground: Newby’s exciting Adventure Garden has been thoughtfully and safely designed for children of all ages – from swings for toddlers through to climbing frames and bridges, an aerial slide and pedalo boats for the older children. The ‘Tarantella’ dancing water play area by William Pye is now OPEN!
  • The Miniature Railway: The Newby Hall Miniature Railway which runs along the River Ure, is a delightful ride with fantastic views of the gardens. Our trains run every day we are open – and always on time!
  • Dollshouse Exhibition: Newby Hall is now the permanent home to one of the finest collections of dollshouses and miniatures in the world, thanks to the generosity of collectors Caroline Hamilton and Jane Fiddick.
  • The Bear House: We hope you will enjoy visiting Gyles Brandreth’s Teddy Bear Collection, housed in a new ‘paw’pose built home within the gardens at Newby Hall.
  • Chippendale at Newby: Newby Hall near Ripon in North Yorkshire is the home of Richard & Lucinda Compton. Richard’s ancestor, William Weddell, engaged Robert Adam to redesign the Hall interiors to provide a backdrop for his extensive Grand Tour acquisitions in the late 18C.

  • Newby Hall & Gardens open Wed - Sun, as well as Bank holidays during school term time. We open 7 days a week throughout the Easter, May half term & Summer school holidays.
  • *During September the House & Gardens will be closed from the 14th to the 20th of September in preparation for the Harrogate Autumn Flower show on the 18th - 20th of September 2026.
  • The Hall will be open for 1 hour guided tours, maximum of 20 per session, please book online. The Hall can be unavailable on certain dates due to weddings, these dates will be greyed out online.

Newby Hall is just a few miles from the A1(M), the main London to Edinburgh motorway. Close by are the magnificent Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors National Parks and the historic cities of York and Ripon. There are several disabled spaces allocated in the main visitor car park, adjacent to the Ticket Office and Blue Badge holders will be directed to this area.

  • Follow the A61 to Ripon and turn onto the B6265 (Boroughbridge Road).
  • Follow the brown tourist signs to Newby.
