Northampton & Lamport Railway is a volunteer-run heritage railway located just 5 miles north of Northampton. Set in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside, it operates on part of the former LNWR Northampton to Market Harborough line, closed in 1981. It offers heritage steam and diesel train rides along a scenic 2-mile line.

Visitors can enjoy return train journeys lasting around 50 minutes between Pitsford & Brampton Station and Boughton Station, with departures from 10:00 to 15:00. Special experiences include the Steam Driver Experience (£365), Steam Footplate Ride (£60), Diesel Driver Experience (£260), and Diesel Cab Ride (£60), offering hands-on or spectating opportunities inside heritage locomotives. Driver Experiences

  • Steam Driver Experience: If you’ve ever wanted to drive a steam train, get your hands on the regulator, or master the art of keeping the fire roaring, this experience is just for you! These are private solo experiences, for one participant at a time, giving you an unbroken full hour of driving and firing, going up and down the full length of our 2 mile line. The driving experience is preceded by a 30 min briefing and theory session (1.5 hours in total).
  • Steam Footplate Ride: Have you ever wanted to experience the sights and smells of the footplate of a working steam loco, get a driver’s eye view and see how it all works? Footplate Rides are a spectating experience only. You will not be driving or firing. Each participant will ride in the loco cab for one round trip of the line during a normal public passenger service (roughly 30 mins). Only one participate is permitted on the footplate for each trip.
  • Diesel Driver Experience: Feel the raw power of a heritage mainline diesel loco, with our Diesel Driver Experience. These will be private solo experiences, for one participant at a time, giving you an unbroken full hour of driving experience, going up and down the full length of our 2 mile line. This is preceded by a 30 min briefing and theory session (1.5 hours in total). There are only 4 places available each day (9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm).
  • Diesel Cab Ride: Have you ever wanted to ride in the cab of a heritage mainline diesel loco? Cab Rides are a spectating experience only. You will not be driving. Each participant will ride in the loco cab for one round trip of the line during a normal public passenger service (roughly 30 mins). Only one participate is permitted in the cab for each trip. Friends and family can purchase normal train tickets to ride along in the main train carriages.

Facilities

At Pitsford and Brampton Station you will find:

  • Platform 3 Buffet: open on operating days selling a selection of hot and cold drinks, ice lollies, snacks and freshly prepared hot food.
  • Souvenir Shop: open on operating days selling a wide range of gifts, books, toys and other items
  • The Shed (bric-a-brac shop): open on selected operating days when sufficient volunteers are available.
  • Signal Box: The ‘box is fully operational and controls all our train movements. You are welcome to go up and look in the ‘box, but please do not distract the Signalman whilst they’re working!
  • Toilets: including an accessible toilet.
  • Free parking

At Boughton Station you will find:

  • Small booking office, shop and seating area: accommodated with a buffet coach stables in the bay platform.
  • Toilets: one unisex toilet cubicle.

What to see

  • The Northampton & Lamport Railway (NLR) is a volunteer-run heritage railway just a few miles north of Northampton. It uses part of the former LNWR Northampton to Market Harborough line, which was closed by BR in 1981.
  • The Northampton & Lamport Railway (NLR) is a steam and heritage diesel tourist railway in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside. We are located just 5 miles from Northampton we are within easy reach of the motorway network.
  • The NLR follows the alignment of the old Northampton to Market Harborough line, which closed in 1981. Running parallel with the railway is the Brampton Valley Way (BVW), a 14-mile linear park from Northampton to Market Harborough.
  • The BVW provides a lovely easy flat walk (or cycle) through the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, as well as a great vantage point to see the trains running past! It makes a great addition to any visit.
  • The NLR is run purely by volunteers. This includes everything from running the trains and station facilities, to restoring the enchanting old rolling stock, to restoring and extending the line.

  • Hire half a carriage (32 seats) on one of our normal service trains (great for a special birthday treat), or
  • Hire a whole carriage (64 seats) on one of our normal service trains, exclusively for your group, or
  • Hire a whole train (3 carriages) on one of our normal operating days, exclusively for your group (with your choice of being steam of diesel hauled), or
  • Hire a train on a day the railway is otherwise closed (with your choice of steam or diesel loco)

  • By Car: Pitsford & Brampton Station is situated next to the “Brampton Halt” public house, on Pitsford Road, between Chapel Brampton and Pitsford; approximately 5 miles north of Northampton. We have plenty of free on-site parking at Pitsford & Brampton Station. The railway has no dedicated parking at Boughton Station. The nearest public car park is the Brampton Valley Way car park, in Brampton Lane.
  • By Public Transport: Our new southern station at Boughton is within easy reach of Route 14, operated by Stagecoach. With buses to/from Northampton town centre every 30 mins (including Sundays and Bank Holidays), passengers are able to alight at the bus stops on Welford Road (A5199, just south of The Windhover pub) and take the short (150m) walk north, to Boughton Station.
