Nymans

Description

Nymans the comfortable, yet elegant, house reflects the personalities and stories of the talented Messel family. In spring see blossom, bulbs and a stunning collection of subtly fragranced magnolias. The Rose Garden, inspired by Maud Messel’s 1920s design, is scented by hints of old-fashioned roses. (Please note the Rose Garden is undergoing extensive restoration during 2025 / 2026).

Dramatic shows of vibrant native tree colour in autumn precede winter’s structural form, with pockets of perfumed daphne throughout the garden. Discover hidden corners through stone archways, walk along tree-lined avenues while surrounded by the lush countryside of the Sussex Weald. The adjoining woodland, with lake and bird hides, has plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

Prices starts from £22.00 with for adults, £11.00 for Child and £33.00 for Family. If you are looking for Best place to visit with family and kids then you should visit this place once for day out with kids and families.

  • Visiting Nymans garden: Discover ruins, statues and year-round beauty and interest. Created by plantsman and designer Ludwig Messel in the late nineteenth century, it’s a garden lover’s delight with significant international and heritage plant collections. More open and flowing than a ‘garden of rooms’, different areas of the garden represent Nymans’ distinctive blend of formality and informality to perfection. Garden tours are available daily and take in distinctive seasonal highlights.
  • Explore Nymans house: The house is closed for conservation and will reopen on Sat 28 March. The rest of Nymans remains open. Part ruin, part house, this medieval style manor is not as old as it seems. Ravaged by fire in 1947, the once Gothic mansion is now romantic ruins and unexpectedly charming rooms last occupied by Anne Messel in 1992.
  • Explore Nymans’ woodlands and wider estate: Come and explore Nymans’ ancient oak and beech woodland, home to cascades, sandstone outcrops, a lake and a large variety of plants and wildlife. Can you find the tallest tree in Sussex, scurrying squirrels, birdlife on the lake, or fungi?
  • Visiting Nymans with your dog: Between 1.30pm and 4pm each day until Sat 31 Jan 2026, dogs are welcome in the garden. Nymans is a one pawprint rated place.
