Rudyard Lake Steam Railway, Scenic Narrow Gauge Adventures Await. The Rudyard Lake Steam Railway is a ridable miniature railway and the third railway of any gauge to run along the side of Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire, England.

Join us for a great family day out on the little railway down by the lake, behind one of our historic steam or diesel locomotives, whatever the weather, in our covered carriages.

Features

Drive a Train: Our Experiences are for Full or Half Days and for a maximum of two participants (although one person is usual) making them a great birthday gift or present. Each course starts with a safety briefing so that you understand the basic safe operation of the railway and steam locomotives.
Our steam fleet:

  • Pendragon: Pendragon, was built in 1994 by Exmoor Steam Railway. She is a 2-4-2T, with 4″ Bore by 4.75″ stroke Cylinders and 150 PSI working pressure. 
  • Excalibur: Excalibur is a coal fired 2-4-2 tank engine. Works No. 293 it was built in 1993 by Exmoor Steam Railway and was originally called River Churnet and painted dark green. 
  • King Arthur: No.8 King Arthur is a coal fired 0-6-2 tank engine. Works No. 324 it was built in 2005 by Exmoor Steam Railway.
  • Victoria: Victoria was built in 1993 specially for the Isle of Mull Railway in Scotland by David Vere of Mouse Boiler Works.
  • Waverley: Waverley is a 4-4-2 tender engine No. 196 built by David Curwen of Devizes in 1948 and called Black Prince. It has a long history and has run at Weymouth, Loughborough, Dinting and the Isle of Mull.
  • Norfolk Pioneer: She was built (well finished) in 2011, being built by Tony Martin who is the Chief Mechanical Engineer for the Wells and Wallingsham Light Railway.

  • Dogs: Well-behaved dogs welcome (on leads).

What to see

Featured Events:

  • Halloween express: October 30th & 31st, 2026. Our Halloween Express trains running through the day from 11am until 3pm with evening scare trains running at 5, 6 and 7pm.
  • Twilight Express: TBC. Join us on a magical journey along the stunning Rudyard Lake in the late nights of winter. Bookings will be open closer to the time.
  • Santa & Steam Specials: December 12th, 13th, 19th & 20th 2026. Santa, Steam Engines and full of Christmas cheer! Bookings can now be made via the button below.
