The Trail stretches for 34 miles/55 kilometres along Cheshire’s central Sandstone Ridge and promises superb, unbroken, and often elevated walking across this green and pleasant English county.

Things to do on the Sandstone Trail: The Sandstone Ridge runs through some of Cheshire’s prettiest countryside and, not surprisingly, there are plenty of attractions and other places where walkers and visitors can enjoy themselves along the way. The unspoilt countryside around Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail offers a good range of visitor attractions and recreational opportunities for everyone, from visiting Beeston Castle, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, wind-surfing, downhill mountain boarding, coarse and game fishing, shooting, 4×4 off-road training, tennis and golf, to outdoor education and visitor centres, parks and gardens, an art gallery, a motor museum, a candle factory, an ice cream farm and more.

  • Sail Sports Windsurfing Centre

  • Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre: Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre is part of Organsdale Farm.  Over 350 acres of great riding country for riders of all abilities. Large 46m x 80m arena, a 10km farm ride, a cross country course, BE courses from pre-novice level, water splashes and a water complex. Scenic, traffic free environment. 07809-689972.
  • Willington Hall Riding Centre: Riding lessons, hacking and livery stables in a superb location just off the Sandstone Trail. The Willingtons, Willington. 01829 751920.
  • McDonald Portal Golf Club and Country Club: Voted ‘Golf Course of the Year’ in 1995, Portal’s Championship course is reputedly one of northern Europe’s finest courses.   • Tattenhall Marina: A new, quality 300-berth canal boat marina on the Bolesworth Estate in rural Cheshire. Ideally suited for cruising on some of Britain’s loveliest canals. Close to the Cheshire Ice Cream Farm and the picturesque village of Tattenhall. Cafe, chandlery and convenience store. 01829 771742.
  • Cheshire Fishing: Five spring-fed lakes set in beautiful open countryside overlooking Beeston Castle and the Cheshire Plain. Lakes are stocked several times a week with rainbow trout up to 27lb in weight. Monday-Friday, 8am–dusk. Saturday and Sunday, 7am–dusk. Platts Lane, Tattenhall. 01829 770041.
  • Hampton Springs Fishery: Eight spring-fed lakes covering over 12 acres of water in the heart of the south Cheshire countryside. Emphasis on providing a mixed bag of fish, with carp of over 20lbs. Open every day from March 1st to December 24th, and weekends only from the end of December to the end of February. Open 8am-8pm or dusk in summer, and dawn to dusk in winter. Walking for health: It’s never too late to start walking. Walking is for everyone, from toddlers to mums and dads and the elderly. It’s safe, free, easy and benefits the whole body. And it can boost your self esteem and help you feel more in control of your life, too.
Trail Race: The Sandstone Trail Race is held annually, usually in September. For 40 years, between 1977 and 2016 years was organised by Deeside Orienteering Club. But, since 2017, the race has been run by Run Cheshire. The Sandstone Trail Race consists of two alternative races run at the same time; both follow sections of the Sandstone Trail.
Long distance links to the Sandstone Trail: Ten other middle and long distance paths, long distance routes, ways or trails connect to Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail. Most are shown and named on the Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25,000 series maps. These routes give keen walkers, hikers and ramblers the option of continuing on across country, or creating their own long distance circular walks.

Facilities

  • Parking: There are lots of official car parks and other parking places along the Sandstone Trail, on Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge, Please consider other people and park thoughtfully. In particular, do not block or obstruct local access or private property. Be aware that careless parking may infringe the Road Traffic Act and be liable to fines or legal action.
  • Food & Drinks: For excellent pub and restaurant food and attentive service, try the Bears Paw at Frodsham, the Swan Hotel at Tarporley, the Pheasant Inn at Higher Burwardsley, or Docket No. 33 in Whitchurch. Nearby, but a little off the Trail, is the upmarket Carden Park Hotel – Cheshire’s Country Estate.

  • Road: The Sandstone Trail is easy to reach by car and taxi from the A49 (north/south) and the A534 (east/west). Car hire is available from Chester, Crewe, Wrexham, Liverpool and Manchester.
  • Trains: There are good rail links to several places along the Sandstone Trail. Relevant stations include Frodsham at the northern end, Delamere roughly in the middle, and Whitchurch at the southern end of the Trail. Both Frodsham and Delamere stations have regular services from Chester and Manchester; while Whitchurch station has regular services from Crewe and Shrewsbury.
  • Buses: Regular bus services connect most of the major towns and villages along the Sandstone Trail. For bus times and passenger information, visit the Cheshire Traveline.
  • Taxi: Much of the Trail crosses open country away from main roads, buses and train stations. Local taxi firms include Town & Country Carriage Ltd, based roughly half-way along the Trail. To book a pickup or drop off, call Andy on 07494 240456.
