Designed by Philip Webb, the house is one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The house is dressed for a weekend stay in 1925, so you can imagine you are a guest of the family.

A major restoration of the 5-hectare (12-acre) hillside garden showcases year-round seasonal highlights and an award-winning plant collection. On the wider estate, footpaths lead out into the woodlands, Ashdown Forest and wider High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

  • The garden at Standen: Explore the garden at Standen, divided into many outdoor 'rooms', each with its own theme, colours, texture and detail. The 12-acre garden at Standen is almost entirely the creation of a self-taught gardener, Margaret Beale, who was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. Please note that access to the upper gardens is via the bookshop steps and the Quarry Garden is closed.
  • Explore the estate at Standen: Enjoy wonderful walks through 100 acres of the original Standen estate, including ancient bluebell woods and meadowland, which can be enjoyed all year round.
  • Walk from Standen through Rockinghill, Jenkins Shaw and Hollybush Woods: This moderate walk takes in the Standen estate and wider Sussex countryside, passing through tracts of ancient woodland that are carefully managed by National Trust volunteers to aid and increase biodiversity. The route takes you to several points of interest, including a site used by the Roman for smelting iron.
  • Retail: Arts and Crafts and Morris & Co. inspired gifts, textiles and ceramics with a range of seasonal plants and pots to fill your garden.
  • Second-hand bookshop: Second-hand bookshop with a variety of books on offer, from fiction to fantasy.

What to see

Top Trails: 

  • Standen to Selsfield Common walk: Starting at Standen House, this 8.5-mile walk is ideal for experienced walkers. The route takes you around Selsfield Common, a heathland habitat of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), along country paths and through wildlife-rich woodlands.
  • Walk from Standen to Kingscote Bluebell Railway: A country walk for more experienced walkers to and from Kingscote Station and the celebrated Bluebell Steam Railway.
  • Standen Hollybush Wood walk: This is a short walk around Hollybush Wood, part of the original Standen Estate. Hollybush Wood has remained tree covered and ancient woodland indicator plants grow in abundance, orchids, bluebells, dog's mercury and others. Stoats and weasels live among the undergrowth and herds of deer can often be seen running through the trees.
