Stott Park Bobbin Mill near Lake Windermere is the very last survivor of the 100-odd Lake District mills which produced wooden bobbins for the Lancashire Cotton industry. ‘Bobbin boys’ aged from 10 to 14 worked here in arduous conditions to produce 250,000 bobbins a week. Packed with clattering belt-driven machinery, Stott Park Bobbin Mill is presented just as it was in the 1870s.

Demonstrations show you how raw timber from the surrounding woodland was transformed into bobbins. Explore the mill’s four acres of woodland, which are carpeted with bluebells in late April and May. Look out for wildlife, browse our second-hand bookshop and enjoy a woodland picnic.

See a bobbin being made: Step into the mill and be transported back in time by the sounds and the smells of the bobbin mill. On your guided tour, you’ll experience working practices from 1870. Watch raw wood, taken from the surrounding woodland, transformed into a bobbin. See the different processes of creating a bobbin, from cutting to boring to drying.
Explore the woodland: You'll find the mill nestled away amongst four acres of woodland. Look out for local wildlife and enjoy copious amounts of bluebells in late April and early May. Find the perfect book in our second hand book shop and relax with a picnic surrounded by nature.
Learn about the bobbin makers: Stott Park was a vital part of the local community with many of the workers and their families living close by. It was not unusual for many generations to work at the mill. All the workers experienced long hours, dangerous machinery and dusty conditions. Child labour was also very common in the mill. Gardens: Stott Park Bobbin Mill is situated within four acres of woodland close to Lake Windermere. It is convenient for local walks in the area. During Guided Tours there is plenty of space for children to explore the grounds with a small play area by the picnic tables.
Exhibition: The Drying Barn has a permanent exhibition tracing the history of bobbin making. During Guided Tours, visitors can watch demonstrations of the working machinery which still produces bobbins for sale today, and experience the traditional skills involved in this authentic Lakeland craft.

Facilities

Parking: The top car park has parking for 15 cars and up to three coaches and is 200 metres from the mill reception. For accessible parking: the lower mill car park has seven spaces and three designated disabled spaces. This car park is 50 metres from the reception and mill entrance.
Dogs: Dogs are not permitted on the guided tour inside the mill. Dogs on short leads are welcome in the grounds.
Toilets: During Guided Tours male, female and disabled toilets are available on site. Please note that they are not accessible when the site is closed.
