Bredgar Railway - a GREAT day out for all - as well as saving engineering heritage. Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway is a location supported by over 100 volunteers as well as our many thousands of visitors each year despite being one of the lessor known attractions in Kent.

As our railway developed, complementary attractions were added: traction engines, a steam roller, vintage cars, miniature locos and a model railway. All have historical significance and a unique appeal. The main objective of the railway is the preservation of steam locomotives in a form which enables railway enthusiasts, the general public and children to appreciate how important this type of energy was to industry for over 200 years.

Features

  • Steam loco driving: The day starts at 10am with an induction explaining the safety and the basic introduction to the workings of a steam locomotive. You will then join the instructors for hands on experience all morning before stopping for lunch. In the afternoon the carriages are coupled up to give the experience of pulling carriages on the line.
  • Diesel loco driving: The railway is hoping to introduce diesel driving courses.
  • Fire truck driving: The railway is hoping to include Fire Engine Driving Days. Arrived from the USA in October 2017 a 1991 Pierce Arrow aerial truck with 105 foot ladder. This was designed and used, in Woodstock Virginia USA, as a high level rescue appliance and a means of delivering water to high or difficult locations. It is capable of lifting 400lbs at full stretch 90 degrees to the truck or delivering 4000 Litres of water a minute from the nozzle at the top of the ladder. The truck was taken out of service in September 2017 and was destined to be cut up. 
  • Tractor driving: The railway is hoping to introduce tractor driving days.

Facilities

  • Parking: Car parking is free. Car park opens at 10:00 am, first train 11:00 am, last train 4:30 pm, car park closes 5:30 pm.
  • Food & Drinks: Our wonderful tearoom is open Wednesday to Sunday 9am until 3pm.  Great selection of refreshments.  Really good coffee, cakes and local chocolate to really savour - great addition to the adults Christmas stocking!  Reasonable priced breakfasts and lunches. 
  • Dogs: Well behaved dogs on leads are very welcome.
