The Dracula Experience It is a unique tour through the Dracula story and its connection to Whitby, featuring animated scenes, electronic special effects and live actors. In 1885, the Russian schooner The Demeter was caught in a wild storm and ran aground in Whitby Harbour on Tate Hill Sands.

Mysteriously, all the crew were dead — including the captain, who was lashed to the helm. The moment the Demeter ran aground, a huge black dog was seen to leap ashore and run up the 199 steps towards Whitby Abbey. The dog was said to be one of the many forms into which a vampire could transform. Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula had arrived in England.

Bram Stoker wrote the story of Dracula in Whitby. Inspired by the town’s atmosphere and ghostly superstitions.
The tour includes a recent addition, our new cinema shows a movie created in-house which tells the story of the real Dracula (Vlad Tepes) in Transylvania, and how this the story inspired the writing of the book Dracula by Bram Stoker.
The book was written in Whitby and many scenes from the story take place in Whitby.
Indeed some of Bram Stokers research for the book took place in this very building when it was The Captain’s Reading Rooms.
