Features

  • What You’ll See: From tiny, touching identifying tokens left by mothers with their babies to composer George Frideric Handel’s will. Artworks by celebrated contemporary artists like Yinka Shonibare CBE, Tracey Emin and Michael Craig-Martin, as well as those made and donated nearly three centuries earlier by William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds.
  • Our Art & Objects: Our Collections help to tell the story of the Foundling Hospital and the children who lived there, as well as its vibrant community of artists, musicians and supporters. The Foundling Collections include paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture, clocks and more. Some of the most moving objects are the identifying tokens left by mothers with their babies in the Hospital’s earliest years.
  • Take a 360° tour of the Museum: You can digitally ‘step into the Museum’ from the comfort of your own home from anywhere in the world. Take a 360° tour to discover some of the key objects and works of art on display.

Our Historic Rooms:

  • Foundling Hospital staircase: Winding up the central spine of the Museum is the original oak staircase from the boys’ wing of the Foundling Hospital. The wide, flat, sturdy handrail and broad turned balusters are suggestive of the utilitarian nature of most of the fittings in the original interiors of the Hospital building.
  • Picture Gallery: This room, one of three historic interiors from the original Foundling Hospital building, recreates the original Picture Gallery built to house the charity’s growing art collection.
  • Foyle Committee Room Gallery: Many of the Hospital’s Secretaries, the equivalent of a chief executive, used this room (known simply as the Committee Room) to undertake the charity’s work. It was also known as the Secretary’s Room.
  • Court Room Gallery: This elaborately decorated room, with its fine Rococo ceiling and works of art by leading British 18th-century artists and craftsmen, was the venue for meetings of the Foundling Hospital’s Governors as well as the annual dinners held by its artist Governors.
