The North Norfolk Railway – also known as the "Poppy Line" – is a 5+1⁄4-mile heritage steam railway in Norfolk, England, running between the towns of Sheringham and Holt. The North Norfolk Railway is owned and operated as a public limited company, originally called Central Norfolk Enterprises Limited.

We run a selection of Railway Experience days throughout the year, perfect for the enthusiast and those looking for something a bit different. Using our experienced crews, staff and volunteers as your guide, take control on the footplate or in a signalling box for a once in a lifetime experience. Our Railway Experiences make ideal gifts and have proved extremely popular.

Railway Experience Days:

Ultimate Steam Driving Experience – Gold: The Gold Driver Experience course runs over five consecutive days from Monday to Friday and is based at our locomotive workshops at Weybourne. The course starts with two days in the classroom learning about locomotive theory and method of working on the railway. The third day is practical experience of preparation of the loco followed by two days on the footplate out on our line – one with a light engine (a locomotive without carriages) and one hauling a train.
Steam Driver Experience – Silver: Our silver experience gives you the opportunity to have two complete round trips over the full length of our picturesque line working one of our magnificently-restored steam locomotives at the head of a train between Sheringham and Holt. You will drive one trip and fire one trip spending 11 miles doing each. You will learn about the workings of the engine and the operation of our railway under the guidance of our fully qualified crew.
Steam Driving Experience – Bronze: Our bronze experience gives you a taste of driving and firing during two return journey over the full length of our picturesque line from Sheringham and Holt. Climb aboard a steam engine (on its own, without a train) and take the controls under the guidance of an experienced crew.
Diesel Driving Experience: Come and join us for one of our Signalling Experience Days. This exciting day offers the chance to take part in the signalling of our regular service trains on selected dates throughout the year.Your experience day will include an introduction to signalling principles, instruction of signalling techniques and practical signalling experience. Before the day, we will send you a our Signalling Information Guide guide, so that you can swat up and sound like a pro before you go!

Facilities

Parking: Car parking is available at Sheringham (Pay & Display), Weybourne and Holt. Car parking is free (suggested donation of £3) at Holt and Weybourne although space at Weybourne is very limited, so the best way to arrive is by train!
Food & Drinks: Visitors are welcome to bring food or drink, either bought at one of the Railway’s station buffets or from home, onto our trains.
Dogs: Dogs are allowed to travel on our daily services for a small fee.

We offer far more than just a train ride – our great value All Day Rover* tickets allow you to hop on and off all day and travel on contrasting trains and explore Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt stations.
The days with a coloured block on the calendar show dates on which trains run (if there is no colour block, the railway is closed). Advance booking is required for all dining trains.
Our teams are currently in the process of finalising timetables for 2026 – the Railway will be open for February half term (Feb 14 – 22), on Sundays throughout March and on most days between April and October.

By Rail: Sheringham Station can also be access by mainline rail services, approximately a 2-minute walk from our station. Please see the National Rail website for travel enquiries.
