The Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology is a museum of ancient Mediterranean archaeology, primarily that of ancient Greek civilisation but with smaller collections of Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman items. It contains one of the most important collections of ancient Greek pottery in the United Kingdom.

The Ure Museum showcases a rich collection of Greek and Egyptian artefacts that bring the ancient world to life – from pottery and sculpture to objects used in daily life.   • Modern Art: The Ure Museum’s modern collections include modern art created by 20th century artists who lived in Reading. These include Allen Seaby, whose prints and drawings are featured in “Allen Seaby’s Archaeology for Children“, our recent exhibition about Seaby’s archaeology books for children, and sculptors Eric Stanford and Athena Jannis, whose works feature in our sculpture trail “Beyond the Ure“.
  • Explore: The Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology holds a significant collection of artefacts mainly from ancient Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. Its archive relates to the history of archaeology in early 20th century Greece, to the acquisition of artefacts, and to the histories of its founders Percy and Annie Ure and the Classics Department in the University of Reading out of which it developed.
  • Online Exhibitions: We are endeavouring to make all our exhibition available online, in addition to those that are available in the Museum.

  • Parking: We encourage visitors to use alternative methods of transport to get to the Ure Museum, but if you need to come by car, there is a pay and display car park (1a) off of the Shinfield Road entrance next to the Sports Park.
  • Food & Drinks: Our campus has a range of catering outlets serving a wide range of snacks and meals.
  • Toilets: There are a number of toilets throughout the building, which are cleaned regularly by university staff. An accessible toilet can be found a short distance from the museum by entrance 1.
