Features

  • Decorative Art: Our collections of locally made decorative objects are a testament to the skills of local craftsmen and women. Wolverhampton was a major centre of the English japanning industry, which was developed in the 18th century to provide cheaper alternatives to expensive imported oriental lacquer ware.
  • Fine Art: Much of Wolverhampton’s fine art collection was founded on three major bequests. The first was given by Philip Horsman, a local building merchant, who also paid for the construction of the Art Gallery in 1883. Two more important gifts followed of work collected by Sidney Cartwright, a local tin toy manufacturer (1887) and Paul Lutz, a hardware manufacturer (1899).
  • Local History: Our Local History Collections relate to Wolverhampton and the wider area. Most of the material originated as part of the Local Studies collection in the City Library, but has since become an archive in its own right, and material continues to be donated and deposited on a regular basis. These are mainly original records, although we do also hold secondary source material.
  • World Collections: During the 19th and early 20th century some people from Wolverhampton ventured far and wide, acquiring an eclectic mix of items on their travels. These collections offer a fascinating insight into the travels and interests of our forebears.
