A full range of outdoor and adventure activities is also available through the Combined Cadet Force. CLS has an extensive inter-school fixtures list, which promotes elite level competition across the four major school sports: football, cricket, water polo and basketball.School teams annually achieve outstanding results in both Regional and National Leagues and in Cup competitions, and we are very proud of our successes

 A thorough grounding in individual and team sports in the lower years is then enhanced in later years by the introduction of more specialist activities such as sailing, climbing, fencing and martial arts.

The School invests heavily in maintaining and adding to its outstanding facilities, both on and off-site, in order to provide every boy with the opportunity to extend his individual sporting potential.

City of London Scool is an academically selective day school for boys. There are four main entry points to the School:  

  • 10+, or Year 6, Old Grammar
  • 11+, or Year 7, First Form
  • 13+, or Year 9, Third Form
  • 16+, Sixth Form

10+ / Year 6 Entry

  • The School takes between 40 and 44 boys at this stage

Key dates for 10+ 2021 entry

  • Open Events for Parents and Boys Thursday 17 September 2020 and Thursday 24 September 2020
  • Deadline for applications Friday 13 November 2020
  • Entrance Examination Day Monday 4 January 2021
  • Invitations to interview sent out by Friday 8 January 2021
  • Interviews for places, music auditions and sports trials week commencing 18 January 2021
  • Offers sent out by end of January 2021

Selection Process

  • A boy’s age is calculated on 1 September in the year of desired entry. For 10+ entry, a boy will be aged between 10 and 11, and will have completed Year 5 at his current school.
  • For 10+ entry in 2021 (for boys born 1 September 2010 to 31 August 2011), the registration deadline is 13 November 2020.
  • Registration and payment of the non - refundable registration fee must be completed online.
  • Exam;  All registered candidates will be invited to sit examinations in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning early in the January of their Year 5. For 10+ 2020, the examinations will be held on  Monday 4 January 2021. 
  • Interview:   Candidates who perform well in these examinations will be in invited back to the School for an interview, usually in late January
  • The offer of a place at the School is made on the evidence of the examination and interview, together with a confidential report from the Head of the candidate’s current school.

 

11+ / Year 7 Entry

  • The School takes 60 boys at this stage

  • Deadline for full fee applications Friday 13 November 2020

  • Interviews for all places, home visits for bursary places, music auditions and sports trials late January/early February 2021
  • Offers sent out mid-February 2021
  •  Acceptance deadline early March 2021

  • A boy’s age is calculated on 1 September in the year of desired entry. For 11+ entry, a boy will be aged between 11 and 12, and will have completed Year 6 at his current school.
  • All boys must be registered for our Entrance Examinations by the deadline:
  • For 11+ entry in 2021 (for boys born 1 September 2009 to 31 August 2010), the registration deadline is 13 November 2020 for fee paying or scholarship applicants and 6 November 2020 for bursary applicants.
  • Registration and payment of the non-refundable registration fee must be completed online.
  • Exams:  All registered candidates will be invited to sit examinations in English, Mathematics and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning in the January of their Year 6. For 11+ 2021, the examinations will be held on Monday 11 January 2021.
  • Interview:  Candidates who perform well in these examinations will be in invited back to the School for an interview, usually in early February. The interview lasts around 20 minutes, and affords us an opportunity to get to know your son beyond his examination results. It is also useful for him to be able to find out more about us. No specific preparation is required or expected for the interview.
  • The offer of a place at the School is made on the evidence of the examination and interview, together with a confidential report from the Head of the candidate’s current school. An offer of a bursary is also dependent on satisfying the financial eligibility criteria.

 

13+ / Year 9 Entry

  • The School takes 40 boys at this stage
  • Selection of candidates begins when a boy is in Year 6, to join CLS in Year 9.
  • Please note that we have already recruited boys to join at 13+ in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
  • We do not permit boys to be entered for both the 11+ and 13+ examinations.

  • ISEB pre-test deadline by end of November 2020
  • Invitations to further assessments and interviews sent out by Friday 18 December 2020
  • Further written assessments and interviews Spring Term 2021

Selection Process

  • A boy’s age is calculated on 1 September in the year of desired entry. For 13+ entry, a boy will be aged between 13 and 14, and will have completed Year 8 at his current school.
  • All boys must be registered for our Entrance Examinations by the deadline:
  • For 13+ entry in 2023 (for boys born 1 September 2009 to 31 August 2010), the registration deadline is 2 October 2020.
  • Registration and payment of the non - refundable registration fee must be completed online.
  • All registered candidates must sit the ISEB Common Pre-test during the Autumn term of their Year 6. This is usually completed at the candidate’s current school, although it is possible to come to CLS to sit the tests if the candidate’s current school does not offer the examination. Full details of the test can be found on the ISEB website.
  • Confidential reports will be required from the Head of the candidate’s current school
  • Candidates who perform well in the Pre-test will be in invited to the School for short written assessments in Mathematics and English and an interview, in the Spring Term of Year 6.
  • The interview affords us an opportunity to get to know your son beyond his examination results. It is also useful for him to be able to find out more about us. No specific preparation is required or expected for the interview.
  • An offer is made on the evidence of the examinations and interview, together with a confidential report from the Head of the candidate’s current school. All offers are conditional on continued hard work, excellent academic progress and good behaviour at the candidate's current school to the end of Year 8. 
  • Candidates at schools preparing pupils for the Common Entrance examinations will be expected to sit these papers in the core subjects and achieve a high score (usually above 70%) in each subject. For candidates studying at schools which no longer follow the full Common Entrance curriculum, we will rely on evidence from his school that he has continued to demonstrate a strong work ethic and diligent approach to his learning. 
  • For all candidates, we will maintain ongoing dialogue with their current school between offer and the candidate joining the Third Form. 

16+ / Sixth form Entry

 

  • The School takes 12-15 boys at this stage

Selection Process

  • For Sixth Form entry, a boy will be aged between 16 and 17, and will have completed Year 11 at his current school. A boy’s age is calculated on 1 September in the year of desired entry and for 16+ entry in 2021, this is open to boys born between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005.
  • All boys must be registered for our entrance examinations by the deadline. For Sixth Form entry in 2021, the registration deadline will be 5 October 2020. Registration and payment of the non - refundable registration fee must be completed online.
  • The minimum requirement for external candidates to gain admission into the Sixth Form is
    • six full course GCSE or IGCSE passes at grade A* or 8/9, to include the chosen or related Sixth Form subject.
    • In addition, the minimum requirement for English Language and Mathematics is GCSE or IGCSE passes at grade A or 9-7 (unless these subjects are to be studied in Sixth Form, as above).
    • This minimum requirement refers to subjects in which a candidate has received formal tuition at his school from a member of the teaching staff either on or off the timetable. It does not include a foreign language that is a candidate’s home language or native tongue. It does not include GCSE short courses or BTECs.
  • Registered candidates are invited to sit three subject-based tests on Tuesday 3 November 2020. Guidance on the examinations can be found on this Sixth Form Entrance Test Advice Sheet. Successful applicants are called back for interview shortly after. Before the assessment, we shall require a reference from the Head of the candidate’s present school. No offer of a place will be made without a school reference and interview.
  • The subjects offered for testing are from an approved list outlined on the option sheet submitted as part of the registration process. Candidates wishing to study Mathematics in the Sixth Form must sit a paper in this subject and the Admissions Team reserve the right to require certain subjects to be offered for testing depending on the candidate's options.

Fees

  • 2020 -2021 :  £6,313 per term. These fees have been reduced for the 2020 summer term by 10% to £5,680. 
  • School lunch is provided at a cost of £278 per term.

  • Music lessons can be taken by pupils at school at a cost of £258 per term.

Scholarships :

The School offers Academic, Music and Sports Scholarships.

The School offers a number of bursaries to assist those parents of academically bright pupils who otherwise could not consider private education. Bursaries are available to pupils joining the School at all normal entry points and are awarded on the basis of performance in the academic entrance examinations and financial means testing of both parents’ income and assets.
