St. Michael's School is Independent Primary school in Southend-on-Sea for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
A St Michael’s child stands out, because they are given the building blocks to confidently stand on their own two feet, listen and be polite, engage and think strategically, articulate their answers and know that they have been given the support, and warmth, from a school who believes in them every step of the way. St Michael’s offers unrivalled care and attention from the moment your child steps over the threshold. A St. Michael’s child is encouraged and challenged to achieve personal success whilst providing thorough preparation for the next phase of their education. Recently awarded the coveted Google Reference School status, they respectfully combine our traditional values with forward-thinking, to provide the pupils the best of both worlds.
Foundation Stage
Before children begin their education at St.Michael’s, parents are invited to a ‘Welcome to Foundation Stage’ evening. This provides an opportunity to meet staff and other parents and to gain an understanding of our ethos and practice. Children are invited to four familiarisation sessions, two ‘Stay and Play’ where parents are encouraged to stay with their children, plus two further sessions where children will stay independently from the parent or carer. Children may be accepted into Pre-Nursery as soon as they are 3 years old. Nursery children are accepted in the September following their third birthday for a minimum of five sessions a week.
Pre-Prep
Building upon the firm foundations provided in Nursery and Reception, the children quickly adapt to life in the Pre-Prep department, becoming more confident and independent learners and relishing all of the opportunities available to them.Children are taught the National Curriculum by their class teacher with the support of a dedicated Nursery Nurse. Children are also taught Drama, French, Music and Physical Education by our specialist subject teachers. Appropriate support and challenges ensure that all children make the very best progress they can.
Prep
High academic expectations in the Prep Department go hand in hand with pastoral care and a commitment to see all pupils make the most of the varied opportunities available to them. Through the development of our ‘Learning Powers’, pupils are thoroughly equipped, both personally and academically, to deal with the rigours of their secondary education.By the end of the Prep department, Form 6 children achieve well above the national average in Key Stage 2 SATs tests in English and Maths. Thorough preparation in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning also means that pupils have the option to participate in the Consortium Selective Test (11+) and other senior school entrance tests.
SEND
Mrs Natalie Turner, the Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Coordinator works with children who require additional support or educational needs. Some children may just need a helping hand or a boost to set them on the right path to learning; others may need more assistance to help them maximise their potential. Individual support programmes are devised in collaboration with the parents of a child in the SEN learning framework.
Spiritual Awareness
St.Michael’s was founded in the Monastic tradition Church of England and seeks to continue to uphold that tradition in its ethos and daily to termly practice Daily assemblies and regular celebrations of mass within each term inform how we study work and relate one to another. At the heart of our Christian ethos is hospitality and welcome to others of all faiths.
Sports
Physical Education is an important part of the curriculum. All children are encouraged to participate to the best of their sporting ability whilst applying our core values and maintaining positive attitudes. All children within the Prep department compete in various inter-house sports fixtures and the children from all year groups compete in our annual Sports Day events. Our sports’ teams enjoy competing in regular tournaments and friendly matches against other local primary and independent schools.
