Abbot's Hill School

Description

At Abbot’s Hill, academic excellence goes hand in hand with pastoral excellence. They are ambitious for all our pupils and strive to ensure that everyone reaches, or exceeds, their potential by offering exceptional learning opportunities that harness individual strengths. The School was founded on the present site in 1912 by sisters Alice, Katrine and Mary Baird, who founded the school to educate young women of character. Set in 76 acres of grounds within easy reach of St Albans, Berkhamsted, Kings Langley and the surrounding villages, and with excellent transport links to the M25 and the Euston train line, we pride ourselves on the broad and stimulating education we provide. One foot is firmly rooted in our heritage but the other strides forwards into the future. The school’s founding motto was Vie et Virtute – meaning ‘Strength and Power – and this spirit  lives on through our values, which underpin all that they do. Diverse pupils with wide-ranging talents and backgrounds come together in a close community that is large enough to offer choice and flexibility but compact enough to ensure that no child is overlooked.

Facilities

Nursery
The Day Nursery and Pre-School in Hemel Hempstead welcomes boys and girls from six months of age through to Pre-school. They offer a full day and all-year-round provision in our modern, spacious and innovative nursery building which is located next to the Prep School in the spectacular Abbot’s Hill School grounds. The highly skilled and professional Nursery staff are dedicated to ensuring that all the children in their care receive the best start, providing high-quality care and education through rich and varied, planned and spontaneous activities, tailored to each individual child’s needs. Children are nurtured and encouraged throughout their time at Nursery, with clear and open communication with parents and carers key to the happiness of their transition from home to nursery and beyond.

Prep
Here at Abbot’s Hill, they are a family who care about and respect each other. The pupils thrive in a supportive and safe environment where their achievements, whatever they are, are celebrated. In our Nursery, they enable the youngest pupils to develop a strong foundation to set them up for being lifelong learners. As pupils move into the Prep School, our skilled and dedicated staff are exceptional role models whose interactions with our young learners equip them with the skills to stride out, with confidence, into their lives.

Senior School
In the Senior School they build on the solid foundations established in Abbot’s Hill Prep, whilst also welcoming pupils transferring from other Preparatory and Primary schools. We aim to inspire interest and stimulate intellectual curiosity, encouraging pupils to think for themselves, take charge of their learning and explore new ideas. Learning new skills such as teamwork and leadership, and developing a ‘can-do’ attitude are important.Learning takes place in genuinely small classes in which each pupil feels well known. Individual support is given where needed and we ensure that unique strengths are recognised and developed.

The enriching co-curriculum is a key element of the Abbot’s Hill education. The extended school day includes a longer lunchtime break, and is structured to offer over 100 weekly clubs and activities before, during and after the core teaching hours.
