Beechwood Park School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 13 (Gender - 3 to 13 )
From the Woodlands Nursery right through to the Top Form, the education laminates solid foundations of skills and knowledge on which the pupils can build future learning. The highly-qualified and experienced teaching staff encourage children to engage as active learners, to take increasing ownership of their studies, to probe, question, develop an increasing Growth Mindset together with the self-discipline, perseverance and academic risk-taking that is our academic hallmark. The senior pupils are living examples of our coeducational Mission; they are proudly individual yet connected by an education which teaches them to love life and squeeze every opportunity out of it; they embrace challenge and adapt to and are excited by change; they develop resilience and aspire to excellence in all that they do. They are happy, confident adventurers, who enjoy exploring big ideas, who argue and create, retaining balance and truth.
Nursery
Woodlands Nursery’s curriculum is carefully planned and balanced to offer each pupil room for personal self-expression and choice, whilst at the same time ensuring that the key, early academic skills and knowledge are woven into the children’s day, through kinaesthetic, learning opportunities. When you visit Woodlands, you will see and hear happy, busy and confident children who are encouraged to use their teachers as their learning resources as well as their secure, human relationships away from their homes. They really understand that our setting may be the first experience of formal education outside their family for many of our pupils. So, it needs to be one of fun and creativity, offered in an environment where time is taken to care for the well-being of the adults and children working and playing together – day after day.
Pre Prep
The Pre-Prep, or Junior Department as we call it at Beechwood, caters for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, and is housed in its own purpose-built building. The colourful, well-resourced form rooms and Outdoor Classroom of the Junior Department, together with the highly-qualified, friendly and experienced teaching team, are an excellent starting point for children as they embark on the journey of learning.Children are placed into one of three Reception classes, or into one of the three parallel classes in Years 1 and 2. The majority of children join us at 4+, either from Woodlands Nursery or from one of the other local nurseries, and complete the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage in Reception. At Beechwood, every child matters, and the Reception year is very much a carefully supported transition between a child’s earlier experiences at nursery school and the exciting world of “big school” and all that it has to offer. Teaching staff endeavour to harness and develop the natural enthusiasm of every young child and create a life-long love of learning.
Prep
The Prep School at Beechwood begins in Year 3, when children move up from the Junior Department (Pre-Prep) and continues to Year 8. Year 3 is a natural point at which to join Beechwood, if there are places available. There are three classes in each year group from Year 3 to Year 5, and from Year 6 onwards, pupils move into smaller Tutor Groups. Each year they welcome new pupils into Year 7 to spend the final two years with them before moving on to senior schools at 13+.The Prep School is divided into two departments; the Middle Department (Years 3 to 5) and the Senior Department (Years 6 to 8, or Top Form) Departments, each with their own identity and space within the School. As your child moves through the School, expectations change, and opportunities for independence and responsibility increase. Your child will benefit from an increasing number of specialist teachers, each of whom is passionate their subject. As they get to the “top of the school”, your child will further develop their skills, and will have more opportunities to demonstrate leadership qualities, ensuring they are fully ready for the senior school adventure that awaits ahead.
CO-CURRICULAR CLUBS & ACTIVITIES
At Beechwood, your child will be able to throw themselves into a whole host of co-curricular clubs and activities – they will help them to discover their “roar’! Clubs are introduced gradually in the Junior Department, and when pupils reach the Middle and Senior Department they are able to sign up for both lunchtime and after school clubs.Taking part in co-curricular activities teaches pupils valuable skills, alongside being lots of fun; we encourage all pupils to have a go, to try something new, build their confidence, boost their wellbeing and make new friends.
OUTDOOR LEARNING
From Nursery to Year 4, pupils enjoy regular timetabled Forest School lessons, and throughout the School, teachers regularly take lessons outside – from relaxed reading groups on the lawns, to tracking animal footprints in the woods, and making music in “Treetops”, our Outdoor Classroom. In 2021, the school production of “The Wind in the Willows” was staged almost entirely outside too!Forest School provides a holistic learning environment and as such, it is impossible to pin down the many and varied benefits down to a specific skill set or curriculum area.
SCHOOL TRIPS AND OUTINGS
At Beechwood, they believe that carefully selected school trips can provide a valuable additional dimension to the education of our pupils, and they aim to make trips, both day and residential, character building, relevant, informative, and fun!For many adults, it is the recollection of school trips that remain clearest in our memories – the anticipation, the excitement of a coach journey and the prospect of a night away with the friends, and that moment when something that they have learnt in the classroom comes suddenly to life out of school.
AFTER SCHOOL CARE
After School Care is available and can be booked by parents of pupils in Woodlands, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 who are unable to collect their children at the end of the normal School day. After School Care is particularly popular with parents who have older children in the Middle and Senior Departments (whose School days finish at a later time) and who may wish to dovetail pick-up or bus times.Parents who require After School Care are asked to register their children in advance for regular days, although a limited number of places are also held for use by parents whose plans have unexpectedly changed and require a one-off collection time later than 3.15pm.
Selection Criteria: Selective
The admissions process is designed to identify pupils who are able to benefit from our balanced and well-rounded education and to make a positive contribution towards the life of the School. The main entry points are into Woodlands Nursery (age rising 3 – 4), Reception (age 4+) and Year 7 (age 11+) although entry into other year groups is possible during the school year if places are available.
