Moorland Waldorf School is Independent Primary school in North Yorkshire for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )

The school is located in a beautiful corner of the North Yorkshire Moors. They are able to use this wonderful natural environment to the full in the teaching; it provides a calm and nurturing space for our pupils to learn and play. The children spend a lot of time outdoors, the natural world enhances and becomes part of our main curriculum.Moorland Waldorf values childhood as a time of freedom, curiosity and discovery. They offer a broad child-centred education, working with the child’s individual abilities and strengths to bring out the best in all the pupils

Facilities

Kindergarten
Kindergarten is for children aged 2- 6 years, in a mixed age group. There are four morning sessions each week from Monday-Thursday. In Kindergarten, we aim to nourish the child’s innate sense of wonder. Simple toys, crafted in natural materials, call upon the child’s imagination to create and play. Rhythm, routine and a homely environment give the child a sense of well-being and security.Weekly activities include: baking, painting and modelling. In the daily ‘ring-time’ the children learn songs and rhymes about the natural world around them and the seasons. The stories are told rather than read.

Main School
Children move from Kindergarten to the Main School at the start of the school year after their sixth birthday.  The decision when to move a child is carefully considered according to the needs of the individual child. In certain cases, a child may remain a little longer in Kindergarten.  In the first year in Main School children may not attend full days straight away, again this is decided in line the child’s needs and will be discussed with parents.

Features

Things to note

The great outdoors
Moorland Waldorf is fortunate to be located in wonderful countryside and in extensive grounds.  They have large play areas for both kindergarten and the older children.  They aim to make the very best use of the natural environment and this has become even more important in 2020 as they juggle the challenges of a pandemic with keeping the children safe, well and in school.  They do a huge variety of outdoor activities, many of which complement or enhance the main curriculum – nature scavenger hunts, identifying trees and fungi, building a fire and cooking on it, exploring the school grounds and noticing seasonal changes, harvesting fruit and making jam and syrups, collecting and classifying natural objects, developing sensory awareness and mindfulness.
