New Forest Small School

Description

New Forest Small School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 3 to 16 (Gender - 3 to 16 )

Founded in 1994 by Nicholas and Alison Alp, the New Forest Small School is a unique, human-scale school for all children aged 3 to 16. Led by the headteacher Maz Wilberforce, the school has 22 staff members, including full time class teachers and part time specialist teachers. They are situated in the heart of The New Forest, surrounded by open forest… ideal for walks, nature study and outdoor play. They have six classes, a Kindergarten, three primary classes and two secondary classes, which are limited to 12 children to ensure that all pupils receive the attention and support necessary for their personal, social and academic development. They have a garden and use of local sports ground. They also have a permaculture vegetable garden where the children sow, grow, harvest and eat the produce. Children attend mostly on a full time basis, although some pre-secondary aged children may attend part time on a case by case basis.

Facilities

Kindergarten
The Kindergarten offers the best possible start for children from 3 – 6 years old. We provide a caring, supportive and stimulating environment in a warm, light and large double room. It is modelled on European Kindergartens, where children learn through both play and work. The school day is split into morning and afternoon sessions, with the older children beginning to stay all day. There is a maximum of 14 children per session with 3 teachers. Everyday tasks, that we take for granted, are to the child the vital skills required to function effectively in their culture. Mastering these basic skills leads the child towards a greater degree of independence. The Kindergarten is therefore equipped with a large range of ‘practical life materials’- exercises that allow the children to practice basic skills such as pouring, sorting, cleaning etc… Each child is also given a job for the week such as laying the table for lunch, tidying the snack table or watering the plants

Primary
The Primary Classes provide a stress free, inspiring educational environment, comprising Lower Primary (aged 6-7), Middle Primary (aged 8-9) and Upper Primary (10-11) attending either full or part time.  The classes are limited to a maximum of 12 children attending any one session. Children need to attend a minimum of 3 days a week in Lower Primary, 4 days a week in Middle Primary before moving to full time in the second year of Upper Primary. The classes have a range of different ages and needs so our lessons are designed to be both flexible and resourceful. Special activities can be arranged at short notice to respond to current events and interests. They do have a timetable that we work around, however, in consultation with each parent, they can provide a learning programme specifically suited to an individual child.

Secondary
Offering academic excellence without the pressure and with high quality pastoral care, the Secondary classes are for pupils aged between 11-16 years respectively, attending on a full time basis. The classes are limited to a maximum of 12 children attending any one session. The Secondary Classes offer a natural progression for those children who have attended the Primary Class, whilst preparing the children for taking their GCSEs. They also provide an ideal space for all children who thrive in smaller scale environments. they believe that once a lesson is enjoyable and engaging the pupils are ready to be challenged and taken to the next level, therefore pupils are encouraged to think for themselves, to have the confidence to embrace new ideas and to constantly develop their awareness of themselves and the world around them.
