Norton Hill School is a State Secondary school for kids aged 11 to 18 (Gender - Mixed)
Norton Hill is a co-educational, non-selective 11-18 school. The students come from Midsomer Norton and the surrounding villages of North East Somerset. Norton Hill School prides itself on providing a secure, stable and well-ordered environment based on traditional values and genuine care and concern for individuals. They have just over 1800 students at the school of whom 400 are in the Midsomer Norton Sixth Form. In September 2016 we increased the Year 7 entry to eleven tutor groups, in response to a growing demand for places at Norton Hill. Students at Norton Hill belong to one of five houses: Blackdown, Cotswold, Exmoor, Mendip and Quantock. The House system ensures that every student is known individually, whilst enjoying the opportunities that a large school can offer.
Key Stage 3 Curriculum:
The KS3 curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, from core, traditional academic subjects, to creative and expressive subjects. At Norton Hill school, whilst students are always building knowledge and skills to prepare them for Key Stage 4, we have the opportunity at KS3 to explore a wider range of knowledge, ideas and experiences, so that all students have had the same opportunities to develop as fully rounded students.
Key Stage 4 Curriculum:
All students continue with Maths, English Language and Literature, a Humanities from History or Geography, and Science. They also continue with non-examined subjects such as PSHE, P&B (RE), and Games. They are offered pathways that allow them to specialise in a language, take an IT option, or complete an 'Applied Learning Certificate'; they are also offered two further subjects. We are proud of the strong outcomes students achieve each year.
Special Educational Needs
As you may be aware, the Children and Families Act 2014 became law in September 2014. The Act recommends some reforms to the way special educational needs is managed in schools. A new Code of Practice will provide statutory guidance to schools for the support of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. This code is currently available in draft form on the Department for Education website. Useful summary documents are also available on a range of websites, outlining the main changes to special educational needs support and how these changes may affect your child. Nasen, or the National Association of Special Educational Needs, is a very useful organisation providing guidance to parents and professionals on a wide range of special educational needs issues.
Extra Curricular
They firmly believe that high academic achievement goes hand in hand with encouraging young people to develop their skills, attitudes and interests. Thanks to the considerable energy and commitment of our staff, we are able to offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
Activities Week
One of the curriculum highlights is Activities Week held during the final week of the Summer Term.
