The majority of our children progress to the local Harpur Trust schools, but destination schools also include other Cognita Schools as well as a number of state primary schools in Bedfordshire.

Facilities

Nursery
Polam Nursery caters for children from the age of 12 months to 4 years. The well-equipped and comfortable nursery is a fully integrated part of the school, giving your child the opportunity to benefit from an extensive range of facilities and specialist teaching. In January 2021 our Nursery was awarded ‘Millie’s Mark’, a Quality Mark for nurseries awarded by National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) in association with Department for Education and Millie’s Trust. Millie’s Mark is the gold standard in paediatric first aid for childcare providers and Polam is currently the only childcare provider in Bedford with this endorsement.

Early Years
The Early Years classes cover the 3-5 age range – Oaks (3-4 years) is our pre-school class and Reception (4-5 years) is the first class for statutory school age children. These all important years provide the building blocks for future learning. At 3 to 4 years old our children are really developing their enthusiasm for learning. They follow a curriculum that includes a focus on early-literacy, phonics and early maths work. While the emphasis is still very much on learning through play, the children also embark on a more structured programme with Music, Modern Languages, PE and Swimming all forming part of their weekly timetable. We also have visiting teachers join us weekly to teach Forest School and Tennis to our pre-school class

Year 1 & 2 (Key Stage 1 – 5-7 years)
In the Year 1 and 2 classes the children continue their learning journey, accessing a more structured curriculum with their skills, knowledge and understanding further developed across the full range of subjects. Languages, music, swimming and physical education are taught by specialist teachers. A team of qualified and experienced teaching assistants help teachers in their role. School productions, assemblies, and public performances help to develop the children’s creativity and imagination, with local visits and trips further afield enriching their learning experiences and building their understanding of the world around them.
