St Peter's Independent School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 16 (Gender - 3 to 16 )
There is something for everyone at St Peter’s with high levels of participation offering opportunities for the specialist as well as the all-rounder. They offer a huge range of sporting, artistic and cultural opportunities because they want the pupils to establish interests that stay with them for life, as well as learn the skills that will make them stand out in a fast-changing world. They offer co-education from 2 to 18 and the three-school structure enables them to give a tailor-made experience for each age group while giving access to the facilities of the whole school and a strong sense of belonging. Situated just minutes from the heart of York, one of the nation’s greatest and most beautiful cities, there is a strong sense of being part of a modern, dynamic community where we walk, as our motto says, ‘over ancient ways’.
St Peter's 2-8
They are proud to be fun, proud to be different, and proud to put the children at the centre of everything they do. The dynamic and innovative approach, stimulating learning environment, inspirational teaching staff, and outstanding pastoral care have been recognised nationally, with many state and independent schools visiting to learn more. They teach the ‘whole child’ through a thematic approach, ensuring they have a genuine thirst and love of learning. They are welcoming and inspiring, creative and forward-thinking, providing an outstanding learning environment and endless opportunities for adventure and discovery. They aim to nurture happy, curious, motivated, bold and adventurous children, unafraid to embrace life and seek new adventures. Children who leave St Peter's 2-8 are rounded individuals who are well prepared for an exciting future on the next stage of their educational journey at St Peter’s 8-13.
St Peter's 8-13
The children in the St Peter's 8-13 family will grow up and move on to the next stage of their education. They will go out into the wider world and we want to inspire them to see that they can really make a difference in that world. They will help nurture a character centred on integrity, kindness and respect in all their interactions with others. It takes courage to live a life like this, to be a dynamic individual who dares to live each day to the full. You need to learn to be resilient, embrace mistakes and to bounce back. They feel that this best happens when a child feels nurtured within a family environment, a safe place where they can flourish, and that is what St Peter's provides. They provide the space that allows them to provide the children with extraordinary opportunities to discover their passions.
St Peter's 13-8
At St Peter’s 13-18 you will find increasing areas of opportunity whether in the classroom, through academic extension or in the co-curricular programme. They want you to open up new avenues and the sheer breadth of activity means that they operate on a full six day schedule - any less and there wouldn’t be time for all they do.With the boarding community being ever-present, this is a school where being busy, happy and active is a way of life. The years you spend from the age of 13 to 18 are amongst the most exciting and rewarding of your time at school. It is a wonderful age when you start to develop particular interests and specialisms before stepping over the threshold into adult life and all that lies ahead.
Music
Talented musicians are encouraged to develop their skills outside the classroom. Individual instrumental lessons in violin, piano and guitar are offered from Year 2, and Year 3 have taster sessions in strings, woodwind and brass once a week. Pupils can take up the recorder from Reception. The School Choir is represented by pupils from Years 2 and 3. They perform throughout the year at various venues and events including the School Christingle Service, the St Peter’s Whole Foundation Concert and the world’s biggest school choir event at Sheffield Arena.
Sport
Sport competitions provide an excellent opportunity for the children to practise their skills in a competitive yet supportive environment. Inter-House competitions take place at the end of each half term for both Year 2 and 3, whilst all Year 3 children experience playing as part of a team in Inter-School fixtures. They also celebrate our young athletes with three whole school events each year including a Charity Colour Run, Swimming Gala and Sports Day.
School Council
The children take a leading role in influencing aspects of school life that are important to them. Made up of 12 elected pupils, two from each class in Years 1-3, the School Council meets weekly to discuss with staff any concerns they might have. Pupils are welcome to leave notes in a box by the entrance which are collected for consideration by the Council. The School Councilors enjoy the responsibility, helping to organise major events in the school calendar.
