At Yarlet they strive to create and maintain an environment in which all children are happy, secure and challenged to achieve their personal best in all areas of school life.Children attend Yarlet between the ages of 2 and 13, when they leave as confident, responsible young adults who have learned the importance of excellent behaviour, good manners and respect for others. They place great emphasis on an all-round education which allows children to discover and develop their individual talents be they academic, sporting, artistic or musical. The wonderful grounds, 33 acres of them, give Yarlet children space to breathe, explore and discover. They are also home to the games fields, astro-turf pitch, sports hall and swimming pool, which are used and enjoyed by all the children.
Bright, happy faces, bursting with enthusiasm for the day ahead. Learning is fun! This is the first impression which greets visitors to Yarlet's Nursery and Pre-Prep Department.Whether joining the Nursery at the age of 2 years, or at a later stage, children soon settle into the caring family atmosphere which characterises Yarlet and have the opportunity to learn and play in magnificent surroundings. At Yarlet, they aim high from the beginning. Together with academic targets that will both stretch and develop our pupils, children begin to understand the importance of kindness, courtesy and respect for each other, as well as good manners.Flexible finishing times are designed to meet the needs of busy parents. The curriculum places strong emphasis on language and literacy, mathematical development and communication. There is a full academic timetable and specialist teaching is utilised in subjects such as Art, Games and Music. This, together with a daily games lesson, including professional tennis coaching and swimming in the summer, provides our pupils with a rich and varied education. Frequent educational visits also enhance this, to places such as living history museums and the seaside. We also make full use of the Yarlet grounds which encompass woodland, a nature reserve and large wildlife pool.
Music
Formally Director of Music at King's College Madrid, our current Headmaster has a passion for school music and has strengthened this area considerably at Yarlet. The formation of the Yarlet Music Academy in 2010 was a turning point when they took the decision to appoint and quality control the own peripatetic instrumental teachers and have specialist curriculum music teaching from Reception onwards. They are now beginning to see the fruits of this with a full orchestra, many ensembles, two choirs and many individual success stories such as pupils who have won scholarships the their senior schools or gained places in the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus, National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Birmingham Junior Conservatoire.
Drama
Drama provides opportunities for children to build self-confidence, self-expression and creativity. From the Nursery upwards, pupils participate in Nativity plays, Harvest Festival events and special seasonal services in Yarlet's own Chapel. As pupils progress through the school, they take part in regular events, such as Yarlet's much-acclaimed poetry reciting competition, and in special assemblies, to which parents are invited, as well as our older pupils participating in some challenging drama productions such as Macbeth and Under Milkwood.
Dance
Yarlet children have the opportunity to learn Ballet, with tuition by a qualified Dance teacher. Pupils are taught Ballet following the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dancing. The emphasis is on strength and posture and the joy of responding to music and pupils have the opportunity to take ballet productions which are staged for the enjoyment of parents and pupils.
Sport
Yarlet has a strong sporting reputation and, regardless of a pupil's ability, we believe that the spirit of sport and the responsibility of team play are excellent groundings for later life. With games sessions taking place four times per week in Pre-Prep and every day in Main School, it is no wonder that pupils reach an impressive standard by the time they leave Yarlet. The school has excellent facilities, all situated within its own grounds, including a sports hall, football and cricket pitches, an all-weather pitch, netball and tennis courts and a heated outdoor swimming pool.In the Autumn and Spring Terms, sports include football, rugby, cross-country running, hockey and netball whilst during the Summer Term, cricket, athletics, tennis, rounders and swimming are the principal activities.
