Description

Westminster is an ancient boarding and day school with a unique sense of place.

The School is the only ancient London school to occupy its original site, immediately next to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. Its origins can be traced to a charity school established by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of St. Peter in Westminster, and it is more than likely that this spiritual and educational tradition goes back as far as 960 AD.

For centuries, Westminster School has been the educational home of some of the world’s most influential thinkers, writers, poets, politicians, artists, actors, musicians, economists, linguists, scientists, philosophers and social entrepreneurs. We look forward to many more years of striving to equip young people to make a positive impact on society and history.

Facilities

We also have a wonderful Sports Centre that offers over 6,000m² of indoor space, housing a multi-use movement studio, a rowing training suite, fencing pistes, indoor cricket nets, a fully equipped gym, two climbing walls, a dojo and a table tennis area and courts for basketball, netball, five-a-side football, volleyball, hockey and badminton. In addition, there’s the School’s shooting gallery, and our Boat Club at Putney too.

Queen's Scholarships

Those pupils who gain our academic scholarships are known as the Queen’s Scholars.  There are a total of 48 Queen’s Scholars, with 12 chosen every year: eight boys at age 13 and four girls at age 16. The Scholars are chosen based on their performance in the entrance exams and interviews and the scholarship lasts for the duration of their time at the school.

For 13+ entrants, the fee for a Queen’s Scholar is set at 80% of the full boarding fee and for 16+ entrants, the fee is set at 60% of the full boarding fee until 2024 entry, at which point it will move to the same level of remission as for 13+ entry.
Music Scholarships
Those pupils who gain our musical scholarships are known as the Music Scholars. Up to eight 13+ and four 16+ music scholarships may be awarded annually. A Music Scholar will receive a 10% remission of the day fee, whether a day pupil or a boarder, and will also receive free tuition on up to two instruments.

Bursaries
When Westminster was granted its Royal Charter by Elizabeth I in 1560 she mandated that the school “provide for 40 poor scholars”.
As with all other entrants, pupils hoping to benefit from a bursary must first gain a place at the school on academic merit: they must do well in the entrance exams and interviews. Once a place has been granted, parents must complete a financial assessment form designed to establish the level of financial support required. If a pupil’s parents are unable to pay some or all of the fees, an appropriate remission of the fees may be applied.
