Welcome to the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Opened in 1905, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery houses the city’s world class collections, from dinosaurs and diamonds to magnificent fine art and Egyptian mummies. Twenty galleries and a changing programme of blockbuster exhibitions tell the story of the world from the beginning of time to the present day.  

Explore our collections of art, nature and history on display in this beautiful building. Find out about the last billion years of Earth’s history, explore the region’s natural wonders and discover more about peoples’ lives, past and present.

  • Ground Floor: Come in through the main entrance of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and find yourself in the Front Hall – look up to admire the amazing building and see the Bristol Boxkite flying above your head.
  • First Floor: Explore the natural world from dinosaurs to rocks to birds. The First Floor is home to our famous Alfred the Gorilla and the beautiful Romany wagon – you’ll also get a great view of the Bristol Boxkite from the balcony.
  • Second Floor: There’s so much to explore on the Second Floor of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. From stunning paintings to one of the best collections of Chinese glass outside of Asia, we’re sure you’ll find something you love.

Families:

  • Dinosaur activity area (first floor): Create and draw your favourite dinosaurs or fossils and learn about these amazing creatures from our displays, interactives and dinosaur library.
  • Curiosity–under fives activity area (ground floor): Act out a performance on stage, play with puppets, games and read a story or two! Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Other galleries to explore: Other galleries that children love to visit are Dinosaurs, Egypt, British Wildlife, Sea Dragons and Geology. And don’t forget to visit our ever popular Romany wagon on the first floor.
  • Amazing Animal Adaptations–World Wildlife (first floor): Five to eleven year olds will love our fun, interactive family activity area where you can find out about how animals have adapted in amazing ways to live in their environment.
  • Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is autism-friendly: Visiting a museum with an autistic child can be a stressful experience. Here at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery we’re doing everything we can to make the experience fun, engaging and stress-free.

  • Parking: You can park in any of the city car parks but the closest two are West End (BS8 1EH) and Trenchard Street (BS1 5AN), both about a five minute walk away.
  • Food & Drinks: Our cafe is located on the ground floor and offers a delicious range of fresh, Fairtrade and organic hot and cold food and drinks including a selection of homemade cakes, sandwiches and specials.
  • Toilets: Toilets available.
  • Lockers: Lockers suitable for small to medium bags – £1 per use.

  • By train: Bristol Temple Meads train station is a 25 minute walk away. Clifton Down train station is a 15 minute walk away.
