Features

  • Castle: One of the grandest tower houses in Scotland, Castle Fraser dates back to as early as 1454 and was home to the Fraser family until 1921. You can discover the fascinating history of the family as you explore the castle on a self-guided tour. Listen out for music and sounds of castle life as you wander round. There are a number of children’s trails available, as well as expert guides on hand to share the history of the rooms.
  • Walled Garden: The traditional walled garden at Castle Fraser has excellent accessibility for all visitors thanks to its solid paths. Take a wander through and breathe in the wonderful scents. As well as herbaceous and medicinal borders, you’ll find a rich array of fruit and vegetables, including currants and gooseberries grown traditionally on poles.
  • Outdoors: Woodland garden has separate areas of differing ages. The oldest part has huge old specimen trees of oak and sweet chestnut, with a small collection of shrubs and other woodlands plants that grow in the deep shade of the old trees. The newer section was created after a storm in 2002, when the estate lost over 1,000 trees. The woodland was planted to develop a collection of Rhododendron and other trees and shrubs of interest such as ornamental birches and evergreen trees such as Eucryphia and Ilex.
  • Wildlife: Castle Fraser has a long tradition of open water on the estate, dating from when the flight pond was created for duck shooting. Since those days, a wide range of species has settled in, including an important collection of damselflies and dragonflies. Here are our top wildlife species to try and spot when you’re out exploring our trails. Each has a ‘how easy to see?’ rating, a fun fact and a top tip for when and where to look.
  • Tearoom: After exploring the castle, garden and estate, round off your visit by calling into the old Georgian kitchen in the courtyard, now home to our tearoom.
