  • Whether you're interested in historic landmarks or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll, our tours provide an engaging way to explore Hereford's city centre. Hereford is a cathedral city with the relaxed atmosphere of a country market town.
  • Tucked away next to Wales it exudes warmth and happiness. The 12th century cathedral has a wealth of history, and is home to the Mappa Mundi, the only surviving medieval map of the world to remain intact.
  • Visit a museum and art gallery housed in a Victorian gothic edifice. Walk down a web of narrow streets and alleyways where you might just see a full-size replica of a Hereford bull! When it's time to stop, sit awhile in a gorgeous garden, but most of all, soak up the style!
  • An exploration of Hereford's city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the city's treasures.
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Hereford in becoming what it is today.
  • This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy! A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends.
  • Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the city - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

What to see

  1. Almshouses to Cathedral - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms: From ancient almshouses next to perfumed rose gardens this walk takes you on an historical tour of timeworn Hereford. There’s a chequered museum fronted by a huge bull, followed by a charming, thriving indoor market, and narrow streets teeming with quirky shops and places to eat. You’ll pass atmospheric pubs, works of art, and reminders of famous actors, before ending your walk at the magnificent, beautiful Hereford cathedral.
  2. Cathedral to River Wye - 1 mile / 1.6 kms: From the commanding Hereford Cathedral, this walk takes you rapidly out of the bustling centre via quieter roads and footpaths. Past the Old Deanery, and the superbly architected Town Hall – said to be haunted – you finally arrive at the site of Hereford’s former castle, now home to Nelson’s Column, before crossing the River Wye to meadows beyond.
