Features

  • Herb Garden: The garden at Erasmus Darwin House is enhanced by the historic buildings that surround it and we welcome visitors, in Dr Darwin’s words, to “view the wonders of my inchanted garden”.
  • Families: Whether it’s dressing up in Georgian costumes, stepping back in time with old-fashioned games, looking for Erasmouse on our trail, there is plenty to keep kids and families busy at Erasmus Darwin House.

Our Collection:

  • Fossilised Fern: Plant fossils are rare compared to fossils of bones, teeth and shells as the soft tissues of leaves are usually destroyed long before fossilisation can take place. Ferns first appeared in the fossil record around 360 million years ago in the middle Devonian period, but many of the current families and species did not appear until around 145 million years ago in the early Cretaceous.
  • Our Care and Conservation Team at work: Museum volunteer, Jenny and Curator, Alex have been busy crafting in the name of collections care. Cutting out pieces of plastazote to match the shape of the museum’s objects, means the study drawers can be opened without what’s inside rattling around and being damaged. They were also able to remove several rusty old pins previously keeping the objects in place.
  • Polite Notice: Please do not turn up at the museum with a donation for the collection as we are unable to accept everything that is offered. With limited space and storage, we cannot take everything. We have an accessions policy within museum accreditation. If you have an item that you think maybe of interest to the museum please email the office and we will pass the information to the curator for consideration.
