Golden Hind was a galleon captained by Francis Drake in his circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580. She was originally known as Pelican, but Drake renamed her mid-voyage in 1578, in honour of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden hind.

A voyage of discovery:

The building of the current ship: Although the original Golden Hinde was eventually defeated by rot and indifference, the 400th anniversary of her voyage inspired Albert Elledge, president of a San Francisco tugboat and harbour-tour line, and Art Blum, a publicist and Vice-President of San Francisco’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, to form The Golden Hinde Limited of San Francisco.
Sir Francis Drake: Francis Drake became one of the most accomplished European seafarers of his time, with a varied career that saw him as merchant, pirate, mayor and even a brief period serving in Parliament.
Conservation: Since the launch in 1973, The Golden Hinde has sailed over 100,000 miles, with a full circumnavigation, and two more Atlantic crossings to its name. In 2017, knowing that the necessity of a major conservation project was looming, we commissioned a full survey, and the marine surveyor confirmed what we always knew - The Golden Hinde was a solid build, and that it would last well into the future, providing we adopted a rigorous routine of regular work. In March 2017, Toby Millinder joined us as head shipwright and is working with a small but skilled team, carrying out the work whilst the ship remains open to the public – no mean feat!
The Circumnavigation 1577 - 1580: Setting off in November 1577, Francis Drake’s flagship The Pelican, and 4 smaller ships, encountered fierce storms, and the damaged fleet was forced to return to Plymouth. They set sail again in mid- December, with the cover story of travelling to Egypt on a trading mission, in order not to alert Spain to their true goal – raiding Spanish settlements on the west coast of the Americas.
The new voyages: First transatlantic voyage, On the 1st of October 1974, The Golden Hinde set sail from Falmouth on its maiden voyage. Having been constructed to be a centrepiece for the 400th anniversary celebrations of Drake’s supposed landing in San Francisco, this was, naturally, to be its first port of call.
