Hastings Castle, Take a step back in time and discover the history of Britain’s first Norman castle – built by William the Conqueror in 1067. Built in the immediate aftermath of the Norman invasion, the Normans took advantage of the hill that overlooked the port of Hastings and erected their prefabricated wooden fortress – to be rebuilt in stone following the Conquest.

The ruins you can see today are only half of the original structure of Britain’s first Norman castle; the castle’s south wall and keep were lost to the sea whilst remains of the east gate and east wall – which served as the foundation for the two towers, can still be seen. Come and wander through the ancient castle grounds, and don’t forget to explore the whispering dungeons and the remains of the chapel too!

Smugglers Adventure: St Clement’s Caves were formed around 14,000 BC, during the last known Ice Age. Since their creation, these mysterious and spooky caves have had a fascinating role to play in the history of the Hastings area. The caves served as a home, a hospital, an air-raid shelter, and a ballroom – of which even the royal family and The Rolling Stones have visited!
Hastings Aquarium: Home to 3,500 incredible aquatic animals and reptiles. Seahorses, turtles, sharks, and more! You can also re-enter the aquarium as often as you like on the day of your visit.

Parking: Due to our location on the West Hill, we don’t have any parking. The nearest free parking is on Priory Road and on the surrounding residential streets. From there it is a short walk across the West Hill to Smugglers Adventure.

By Car: If you’re driving to Hastings from the Channel Ports, Channel Tunnel, or from Brighton, take the A259 coastal road and follow the beautiful scenic route straight into the heart of Hastings. To reach us from the M25, take the A21 at junction 5 to travel directly into Hastings.
By Train: Hastings Station is located less than a mile from the West Hill Cliff Railway station (approximately a 20 minute walk). Hastings is well connected with excellent rail links throughout East and West Sussex and London. To view train times and prices please visit National Rail.
