The Royal College of Surgeons of England holds over 70,000 items across collections of anatomical and pathological specimens (human and other animals), models, instruments, paintings and sculptures, covering the art and science of surgery from the 17th century to the present day.

Collection:

Hunterian Collection: The original collection created by the Museum’s founder, John Hunter (1728-1793), dates from the mid to late 1700s. Upon his death in 1793, Hunter had amassed a collection of over 14,000 specimens used for surgical training in his museum and anatomy school in Leicester Square.
Hunterian Museum Collection: This collection is comprised mainly of anatomy and physiology specimens acquired after the Hunterian Collection was transferred to the Royal College of Surgeons in 1799. Material in this collection follows a similar categorisation system used in the original Hunterian Collection and is based around biological processes such as reproduction and digestion. The collection includes both human tissue and specimens from other animals.
Odontological Collection: The Odontological Collection contains over 12,000 specimens of skulls, jaws and teeth from humans and other animals. These show normal dental anatomy and a wide range of dental pathologies, from malignant neoplasms to dental caries.
Surgical Instrument Collection: This extensive collection contains around 10,000 historical surgical and dental instruments. These include instrument sets dating from the 17th century, a large number of instruments from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and instruments from the present day.
Microscope Slide Collection: This collections contains over 15,000 microscope slides, dating from the 1700s. Objects in this collection have museum identification numbers with the prefix RCSMS.
Paintings, Sculpture and Furniture: The Special Collections contain decorative and fine art objects including paintings, drawings, photographs, statues, busts, furniture, engravings and the Royal College of Surgeon’s regalia and silverware. Objects from this collection are displayed in the Hunterian Museum and around the College building.
Anatomy Collection: The anatomy collection consists over 1,000 specimens preserved to demonstrate human anatomy. The specimens consist of preserved prosections (e.g. cadaveric parts dissected to demonstrate certain anatomic structures), articulated and disarticulated bones, and resin casts demonstrating the vascular, respiratory, urinary and biliary systems.
Pathology Collection: The pathology collection consists of over 4,000 specimens illustrating all the important branches of surgical pathology. The pathology specimens are catalogued by the following groups, covering examples of malformations, injuries, vascular lesions, infections, primary and secondary tumours, and other sundry lesions when possible.

Facilities

Toilets: Toilets are on the ground floor, to the left as you enter from Lincoln’s Inn Fields. The main toilets are gender neutral and are individually self contained with a toilet and sink in each cubical.
Lockers: Lockers are available on a first come, first served basis. Backpacks, rucksacks and suitcases are not allowed in the Museum and must be stored in a locker.
Assistance dogs: Assistance dogs are welcome. Other animals are not permitted.
