Sir John Soane's Museum is a house museum, located next to Lincoln's Inn Fields in Holborn, London, which was formerly the home of neo-classical architect John Soane. Discover the extraordinary house and museum of Sir John Soane, one of the greatest English architects, who built and lived in it two centuries ago. 

The museum has been kept as it was at the time of his death in 1837, and displays his vast collection of antiquities, furniture, sculptures, architectural models and paintings.

  • Highlights Tour: The classic tour of the Museum, our Highlights Tour will transport you back to Regency London, taking you through Sir John Soane's extraordinary home, left as it was at the time of his death in 1837. This tour visits the Museum's main highlights.
  • Private Apartments tour: We provide free tours of the Private Apartments, on the second floor, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. These were once the most intimate family spaces for Sir John and his wife Eliza, which have been lovingly restored to how they appeared when this unique Museum was a family home.
  • Drawing Office tour: We offer free tours of Sir John Soane's Drawing Office, the oldest surviving example of its kind, which opened to the public for the first time in its 200-year history in May 2023.
  • Explore Soane: If you're unable to visit the Museum in person, you can still enjoy a virtual tour around several of our amazing spaces, wherever you are in the world, using Explore Soane.
  • Photography and Sketching: Photography is permitted inside the Museum as long as care for the collection and Museum is respected. Flash photography, filming your visit, photo shoots, tripods, selfie sticks, large cameras, lenses, and phone calls are not permitted. Where bottlenecks build up, staff reserve the right to discourage photographing objects to ease the flow through the Museum.
  • Collections: Sir John Soane’s Museum is a national museum, displaying the extraordinary collections amassed by renowned British architect Sir John Soane, including antiquities, furniture, sculptures, architectural models and drawings, and paintings including work by Hogarth, Turner and Canaletto.
  • Families: We run a range of exciting programmes for families and children. Taking place during school holidays or at the weekend throughout the year, our hands-on workshops and activities are led by specialist artist educators who explore themes related to the Museum and its collection, and to architecture and culture more broadly.
  • Workshops: During the school holidays on selected Wednesdays, we run more in-depth workshops for children and young people, who spend the day with us working on a specific skill or project. Find out about forthcoming events here.
