Features

  • Garden: Explore the impossible garden at Inverewe! This place of amazing plant diversity was established over 100 years ago in the middle of a barren wilderness. At the same latitude as Moscow and Hudson Bay, Inverewe benefits from a unique garden microclimate thanks to the effects of the Gulf Stream. From bare rock, a luscious garden grew, where you can expect the unexpected. Plants from across the globe thrive here, including rare Wollemi pines, Himalayan blue poppies, Californian redwoods and a fantastic variety of rhododendrons from China, Nepal and India. We have a rhododendron in flower every day of the year.
  • Visitor centre: Experience a true Highland welcome at our newly refurbished Welcome Centre. This local tourist hub is a popular attraction and a great ‘pitstop’ on the North Coast 500 route, which passes through many remote areas. The Welcome Centre includes a tourist information desk, free toilets and our boutique shop, which offers many bespoke gifts. Enjoy the unique items sourced from local suppliers and embellished with designs inspired by the garden plants at Inverewe. Some of our favourites are the beautiful hand-crafted ceramic mugs, Scottish jewellery and delicious local produce.
  • Inverewe House: Visit the home of Mairi Sawyer at Inverewe House, just a 5-minute walk from the visitor centre. Immerse yourself in the mid-20th century in our award-winning interactive museum, where there are no barriers. Inverewe House stimulates all your senses – from the music playing on the gramophone to handling the objects. Explore the history of the garden, first created by Mairi’s father Osgood Mackenzie. Find out where the plants came from and the challenges of gardening on the edge.
  • Sawyer Gallery: Inspired by Inverewe Garden and the landscapes of Wester Ross, this is a gallery for contemporary art, where art seeks to evoke an emotional connection between visitors and the Inverewe experience. The Sawyer Gallery can be found at the heart of the garden and adjacent to Inverewe House. This creative space exhibits a truly inspiring series of artworks throughout the year, which reflect the unique characteristics of the garden and the surrounding natural and manmade environment.
  • Wildlife: The mosaic of landscape habitats in the spectacular surrounding Inverewe estate are home to Scotland’s most iconic wildlife, including red deer, eagles, pine martens, otters and red squirrels. The estate is framed by mountains and two lochs, where the light and colours are forever changing. From towering redwoods to delicate forget-me-nots, from otters to sea eagles, Inverewe Garden and Estate has everything you might want to see and much, much more! Our wildlife hide provides the perfect vantage point over Loch Ewe, where coastal birds, seals and otters can often be seen.
  • Outdoor adventures: Situated between the Marine Protection Area and Biosphere Reserve in Wester Ross, Inverewe is the gateway to wilderness in the Scottish North West Highlands. Take a wildlife boat trip from the Inverewe Garden jetty. Skipper Jamie has years of experience on the waters around Wester Ross and will give you an amazing insight into the marine environment. Inquisitive seals will keep an eye on you while eagles soar above. But what will be in Jamie’s creel when he hauls it onto the deck of the Striker? Boat trips run during the summer months.
