Description

The Manx Electric Railway takes passengers on a scenic 17-mile journey along the east coast of the Isle of Man. Running from Derby Castle in Douglas through Laxey to Ramsey, it offers breathtaking coastal views, wooded glens, and picturesque villages. Opened in 1893, it is the longest narrow gauge vintage electric railway system in the British Isles and still uses its original Victorian and Edwardian tramcars.

The railway features more than 60 official stops, allowing visitors to hop off and explore beaches, glens, and historic attractions along the route. Passengers travel in both open and closed carriages, including some of the oldest regularly operated tramcars in the world. Experiences include the unique Taster Driving Experience with beginner, intermediate, and advanced full-day tram driving courses under expert guidance.

Manx Electric Railway

  • The Manx Electric Railway was built between 1893 and 1899 and connects the Island’s capital, Douglas, with Laxey in the east and Ramsey in the north.
  • It’s acknowledged as the longest narrow gauge vintage electric railway system in the British Isles and still uses its original Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock.
  • In fact two of the trams in use are the oldest regularly operated tram cars in the world! The 17 mile railway will take you along some of the most scenic stretches of railway in the British Isles.
  • On one side you’ll experience the beautiful Manx countryside, glens and picturesque villages and to the other you’ll have far reaching views out to sea.
  • Trams depart from the Manx Electric Railway terminus (Derby Castle) at the Onchan end of Douglas Promenade, and can be located by the large ELECTRIC RAILWAY sign in the cliffs above.
  • Trams also depart from Laxey and Ramsey. Although well known for its rural location there are more than 60 official stations or stops on the Manx Electric Railway network which provides a perfect opportunity to hop off and explore some of the Island’s most stunning glens and coastal areas.

Taster Driving Experience

  • Have you ever wanted to drive a tram car?  Well now you can by taking part in a tram driver experience day on the Manx Electric Railway.
  • Learn the intricacies of the controller and brake systems, find out exactly how a tram car works and enjoy miles and miles of driving experience under the guidance of an experienced and friendly MER instructor.

Full Day Courses On Offer:

  • A ‘beginners’ course for those who have not driven before. First time participants can get to grips with the controls, learn the line and practice your driving style.
  • An ‘intermediate’ course is also offered for those who have driven before and comprises an enclosed Car (such as a ‘Winter Saloon’) plus a trailer. The emphasis on this course is driving, with skills learnt in the beginners course being built on.
  • An ‘advanced’ course is offered to participants who have completed their beginner and intermediate courses. This involves the use of Car 14, which is fitted with ratchet handbrakes, giving a unique driving experience.
